Absolutely they make great rat trap. They will give you a high leg catch and being a heavy trap will take a rat right down. You just need to set them with a very light or no pan tension and you will be good to go. Oh and they have a large pan which Is needed when trapping small footed critters.

The thing about big traps like the 1.75 or the #2 Is In most cases you are getting a high leg catch and they act like a stop loss type trap. With this type trap I wouldn't hesitate setting In 3" of water. Stress and hypothermia will kill those rats even If they aren't being drowned.
Like the Duke said bending the tip of the dog down will help with pan tension.

Also make sure that the rat will not get tangle up in anything. Like weeds you might get wring out.I had use them and 1/2 coil at first and that is what I found out on my own ,if like stated in what will be deep water you will keep them. Also if they are square jaws and get a coon in it .it will chew under the jaws of the trap .If you have that type of jaws on your traps and never know you will have a coon caught add a chew guard on the jaws they work

Poor choice for rats imho. He is wanting a trap that will work on both . Perfect for the money . Loosen the screw on the pan so it just flops down on its own. You will be fine.

Poor choice for rats imho. I was thinking the same thing. A front foot catch on a rat's fragile foot will break the bones. If they don't get into deep water fast, they will wring off. I had some 1.75 Victors. They are a powerful trap. A guy whose main target was coyotes (he would catch as many as 60 or so every year), said his favorite coyote trap was a 1.75 because of its power and size.
I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.

Well They work for me and you constantly get high catches On either the front or hind legs. Less chance of a wring off with those high catches.

Well you may be right but I have caught a fair number of coyotes In a 1.75 sized trap. And 1.75 sized trap placed on a stool or a float will catch you all the rats you want to skin. And a 1.75 size trap placed just under water on a pull out on a rat hut will also keep you busy skinning.
