Interesting that you should mention otter having an impact on creek chubs. I read an article written by a very misinformed lady who happened to read an article that stated river otter only eat rough fish such as carp, suckers, etc. A friend of mine was deer hunting. His deer stand overlooked a good-sized pool in a trout stream. One morning he watched as two otter were consistently coming to shore with trout they had caught in the pool. They would eat the fish and dive back and bring out another one. A DNR fisheries person asked me to trap a trout stream near my home for otter, as the trout numbers had diminished drastically. He suspected otter were a significant factor as there was a lot of otter sign up and down the creek.

I haven't baited a minnow trap in years. I just blind set them where they swim and catch hundreds. I like the metal ones. My favorite has a black coating over the metal. I never did either. But, some minnows are easier to trap than others. Fatheads are easy to trap. Creek or red-tail chubs are harder to trap. Better luck seining them, IMO.

I like and use the black plasticized metal mesh ones. Less likely to be seen and stolen I think.

Turns out my best friend is Greg's Nephew. He hooked me up with the works!
I got a full kit. Comes with:
1)Minnow Trap, 2) Craw Fish Trap, 3)Chum Bucket 4) Floating Bait Bucket 5) Extra Clips 6) Fishing Rod support 7) River Net 8) Magic Fish Scaler 9) Minnow keeper (perfect for the Kayak).
I really like the design and the quality speaks for itself. Can't wait to try them out this spring/summer. How cool is that! Keep us posted how successful you are with the Gees (I know they are my favorite in the salt marshes I trap )... ,.,.
