I’m looking to fulfill my wife’s wish to go on a southern hog hunt. Figured I’d ask some questions on trapperman since I don’t do social media. We’ve searched just what we could find with a simple google search in both Oklahoma and Texas. What we’d be looking to do is possibly a 1-3 day hunt and then be tourists around the area. She just wants to shoot a hog and check it off her bucket list.

Is there any places (outfitters) you can personally recommend?

What is there to see around that area that is neat?

Wouldn’t have to absolutely be either of those states if you have a good place in mind. I know hogs are spread throughout the south.

Feel free to pm

Thanks in advance!

Travis

Check out Scott McCune I think he has facebook pages for both Hunt Texas .com and Fish Texas .com. He operates out of Rockport on the Texas coast and he believes in treating his clients right. PM me if you want a number and tell him Marlin said hello.

Check with Jeff Laskowski on here , he guides hog hunts in southernmost Ok . I’ve not hunted with Jeff but bought a dog from him and can attest that he is a strait shooter.

Has anyone here ever hunted with Shiloh Ranch in Oklahoma?

WIFrost, yup, my son and I hunted Shiloh Ranch several years ago with archery equipment. We went for one each but ended up coming home with five total. We hunted with the original owners, Matt and Cheryl Napper. Great folks, we had a great time and are in fact going back this March. I have not met the new owners but they seem to be carrying on with the same excellent service that Matt and Cheryl started.

Always heard great things about Shiloh Ranch but never hunted there.

Buddy asked me if I wanted to go to Fl on a hog hunt $200 a day and all the rattle snakes I want, ironic since he’s scared to death of snakes. I’m to cheap to drive that far to pay $200 but it sounds like fun.

That would be fun.

How’s the meat compare to farm raised pork?

WIFrost, meat is a little leaner and I felt a little darker. You still know you are eating pork. We enjoyed it. We took the two largest to a processor down in Colgate, just down the highway about 20 minutes or so. They were between 125 and 150 pounds. The price was good as was the finished product. I shot an extra 60 pounder and my son shot 2 40 pounders. The 60 we just boned out to make our own sausage at home and the 40's were skinned and left whole to be smoked/grilled. We really enjoyed them.

We stayed in the small camp, comfortable, but still camp. This trip in March we plan on staying in the double wide across the road with more creature comforts. The only issue we had was the darn armadillo under the cabin banging around in the middle of the night. Not really much of an issue, just our first encounter with a possum on the half shell. Pretty goofy critter. This trip we are using open sighted rifles. I'm using a 1940 Remington 141 GameMaster in 35 Remington and my son is using a Marlin 1895 45/70. He's getting ready for a moose hunt in Newfoundland and wants to get some time on it with some heavy loads. He has already taken a couple deer and a bear with it using a lighter load.

The feral hog (read free range pork) is exceptional when it comes to flavor. I am a bit discriminating and target the smaller end of the yearlings (80-100# is perfect IMO). Paul is right, it is a bit leaner than anything produced commercially but I don't think you will ever fault the flavor.

My family (read old German & Native American heritage) did their own butchering and I remember they would scald a hog as soon as it was put down. I am never set up to anticipate that but I do something similar. I like to spray them down with a bleach solution which kills off all the ticks and lice then hose them down as soon as they get hoisted up. I try to hoist them where I have a hose with strong pressure anyway so I can rinse down the body cavity and flush any possible contaminant / cool off the carcass quickly anyway.

I haven't gotten one but I think those luggage racks that are expanded metal and fit into the tow bar would be ideal for transporting wild game to the butchering hoist in the back yard. Hit them with the bleach sprayer on the rack and then hose them off as soon as they were swinging.

Oh and BTW good luck- I hope you will enjoy getting after the feral pigs as much as I do.
