Nothing but bubbles. I left these be and decided to pull them today for a check. The #14 was fired but nothing in it. Snares tomorrow. [Linked Image]

Baited sets are a waiting game.Once in awhile you hit a house that takes bait good.

I've waited before but nothing like this. It's almost like I have trap shy beaver but I'm the only one who has ever attempted to trap these. I'm certain of that. One pulled the bait around to the side of the pole and this one fired the trap without getting caught. It's the only fired trap they've ever been exposed to. Frustrating.

That's why I always mostly set channel and runs with 330's as I caught more beaver and could do it quicker over baited sets at most beaver flowages. Some beaver flowages are more wide open where it's harder to trap the runs and channels.

The first sets I ever made for beaver were chopped with a spud through a lot of ice near Talkeetna, Alaska around 83 or 84. I like the chainsaw. I appreciate all of the input.

Did you set a 330 in the run?

I did, Bruce, but I didn't fence it off. I put a baited 330 right where the stream enters the pond. Nada. Otter season is closed but I can keep an incidental if it's taken in a beaver set. There's no open water anywhere nearby so I don't think the chances of picking one up is very good.

I just finished up my interpretation of a snare pole. Poplar wired to a length of white PVC. I'll post pics tomorrow before I sink it.

You don't need open water to catch a otter. You need to block the channel off with the conibear with no bait on it to have a chance at a otter. The big adult beaver especially the male also check those areas out.

Yep, our season runs all the way through April. Stubborn I guess, I like catching them...or trying to...under the ice. I've never had such a hard time trying to catch just one beaver.

I would think they need to come up for air somewhere and I don't see many chances for that where my sets are. I'm wondering if I have a bachelor male living in there. I'm not giving up.

They breath the air up under the ice in the water.

That's right. It was -28 this morning and I wasn't in any hurry to run out the door. I got in there this afternoon and my chainsaw was froze up tight. I chipped some holes through the ice to get a look at my traps and then formed a plan of attack for tomorrow. My saw is thawing by my side as I peck this.

This beaver is mocking me and now it's personal. I'll have him on the board before the season is over.

Most of the time up here there is no air under the ice.........unless there is a place that has fallen out in early winter and refrozen is a strange configuration.

I wouldn't try to get fancy with the snare set up.

Just drop an aspen or poplar pole 2-3 inches in diameter down the center of the hole. 8 or 10 feet long........... Hang 3-4 snares around the pole. Top of the loop at the bottom of the ice

That's just about how I configured it. I have two snares at ninety degrees to the pole. Maybe I'll stick another one on back. About a ten inch loop that will ride just under the ice. There's only about eighteen inches of open water under there. Thanks for the help.
