I wonder if "bannock" and Civil War "hardtack" are related? Just let the bannock dry out and probably about the same or was hardtack more of a solid, dried-out cracker...?

Not sure if bisquick biscuits are the same, but probably similar.

It’s not crispy like a cracker. Same texture as a biscuit. When bannock sits on the counter for a day it does dry out, but still tastes good. You can warm it up in the microwave and it’ll be like new again lol.

I don’t eat much of that nut butter. My wife and a couple of the kids eat it.

Here is a helpful hint. If you get a quart can, use a church key to cut two pour holes in the top to let the air out, you can turn that oven skid mark into a pretty biscuit. If you add sugar and lard, it turns something the horses won't eat, but people do, into wonderful things that people wonder, "Why was I eating that bannock stuff.".

I say bannock isn't Bannock without some wood ashes on it! I like to load my up with dried fruits, honey ,sunflwr seeds, pine nuts, sumac seeds(lemony) and chopped cashews. It is the last thing we throw in our outdoor pizza oven after a batch of pizza making.

Bannock is good fried, baked, or any other way you can cook it. I’ve tried it with cranberries and whitefish eggs baked right in with the dough. Good trail food. I prefer my grandmas recipe over any others I’ve tried.

Another one you’ve got to try is this:

The “Eskimo doughnut”
One of my favorites. Really good with chilli and soup. Awesome snack fresh and hot with some thick Rogers syrup for dipping.

Not baked over an open fire. In a dutch oven over hot coals or in a reflector oven or in our wood fired stone slab pizza oven. Over a fire frying would work better, IMO.

Lmao!! The nut butter isn’t used for the bannock. We put butter and jam on it to eat.
That’s where we leave the nut butter, and others use it on toast. Lol

Regular bread dough shaped and a few holes added then deep fried with a flip half way through.

Put a thick slice of bologna between that fry bread Ryan and that meal will last you all day.
I love fry bread and bologna.

Some people deep fry sausage wrapped in dough for trail food. Some ladies make 200+ donuts in one sitting for events or for sale by the dozen.
