Only about 960 miles and they'll be in Whitehorse.

From what I've heard the Yukon Quest is a top shelf dog race it's on my bucket list of things I'd like to see along with visiting Whitehorse again it's been a very long time since I was last there.

Thank you for sharing the pictures with us .

Allan

It was 24 below. Cold enough to keep the athletes (dogs) from overheating.

You can sleep just about every night in a house or cabin on the Iditarod. Leroy and Roger thought up this race as a tribute to real dog-driving and woodsman skills! Long distances between check points.

The Alaska Trappers Association has long supported the race. Sponsoring prizes, breaking trail and setting markers on the Alaska side and occasionally even sponsoring a musher.

I was on the YQ Board for a few years in the very beginning. And my mom, Dr. Jean Buist, served as a Trail Vet starting the second year (1985) until she turned 79 and proclaimed that sleeping on the ground in a sleeping bag was "starting to get a bit difficult!"

Back in the day the race was run by our own T-man musher Yukon254.

Great memories!

Pete

You have no idea how tough she was....!

My Mom graduated from the Vet School at Cornell in 1942. In those days it was not like now; there were NO lady vets!

A reporter on the YQ trail once asked her: "You were a pioneer in your field, Dr. Buist. How do you feel about the Womens' Liberation movement?"

My Mom looked at her and quietly said: "Sweetie, there are those that talk about it and then there are those that DO it!"

She was a real pis ser!

Pete

Very interesting! Dog sledding has always been an interest of mine. As a kid we had a few dogs that did well pulling a sled and remember having so much.
I hope you will keep us posted with the journey it is very interesting and not an easy thing to do. Thanks

I ran a race with Wayne hall once from Dawson to Eagle and back. He mushed his team and stuff from his home in Eagle upriver to Dawson, then raced downriver to Eagle and back to Dawson, then mushed home to Eagle. That's grit.

Wayne is one of a kind. He was like second in the nation Top Bull Rider, Bush pilot , crop duster, animal trainer. I am sure I am missing a bunch. he is pretty busted up from bulls and plane crashes before. He lived here for a few years and then Built a cabin out in woods upriver and moved in, and been there ever since. Raised his boy that won the YQ in the cabin in the woods, In a VERY Cold place, trapping hunting and fishing, Dog mushing.

I out of curiosity followed along on the map on the trail that's some interesting country they are going through Pete I now have a better understanding about what we talked about in the past when comparing the two dog sled races .

From what I read there's 4 teams around 220 miles out it's a shame that this race doesn't get the attention from the sports TV shows as long as it doesn't ruin it.
