So this is my fourth year trapping. I have been successful every year but I only use dirt hole sets. I would really like to broaden my horizons but I do not have enough confidence in making any other sets. Can somebody explain or maybe pictures of how to make flat sets and post sets. Any other set recommendations would be cool as well. Also best places to use a particular set would help as well. Whenever I am making dirt hole sets I usually put them on the edge of a field where there is some brush. I wanted to make a set out in the middle of the field but do not know what's that would be best out there or how the coyote would even find it. Thanks to all

I’ll post what’s been preached over and over...location, location, location. I’m going to set a few traps on planted clover fields tomorrow for the landowner to monitor. He has cameras and has coyotes walking the same exact paths in every picture. One scent post or dirt hole and a flat set at each.
Archives will keep you reading until summer. Some of it may work for you, some may not. Or you might take part of something off one post and combine it with something from another post. The good thing about cameras is they let you know exactly what’s going on.

The Variations of the Flat Set
This 78-page book by Charles Dobbins tells how to make the sets that will take the canines that are "hole shy." Explains a dozen and a half sets to take fox, bobcat, raccoon, coyotes and others.

You can check out Mark Zagger's Coyote U website. I believe he has a video there of how to make his pipe dream set. Remember, it can be modified a little and still work. For me the best place to use them is sod areas so you can blend with the existing grass.

I have been very successful the past two seasons with the compass set. I just put four holes in a square maybe 2 ft apart and bed my trap right in the center of the 4 holes and blend it very well. Then put 4 different baits or lures in each hole. Here's one I caught yesterday in a compass set on a pond dam [Linked Image]
