Seen a bunch of wolf sign on the trail into camp last couple days.So I dug out a bunch of tainted beaver carcasses from under the snow to take out to the line.
Several hundred pounds of meat for them.I'll drag the old sleigh into a thick spot and see what shows up.
If it looks like a big pack I may set to take a few out.I have a wolf carcass from last fall to drag along the trail after I drop the bait. [Linked Image]

You must not have shrews. You would have a pile of bones if you had left those carcasses on the ground in my yard.

Sounds like fun! Take some photos of your snare set-ups and any catches you make!

I am cleaning up my yard placing out baits myself.

I wired three blanket beaver carcasses together with 16 gauge wire and put out 16 of these sets in the Oregon high desert a week ago. Five of them got discovered in the week and the beaver were completely gone!

I'll do it differently next time.

Boco, can you describe / further explain what you are doing with the wolf carcass? I have been experimenting with burying coyote feet in my hay sets as an added attractant but not enough catch's to say if it is helping or not.

Thank you,
Dave

I chop into it with an axe,and just drag it behind the snowmachine along the trail both ways from the bait pile.If an animal crosses the trail it may follow the trail to the baitpile.
Only thing, the scent doesn't last too long on the snowmachine trail, but I got to get rid of the carcasses anyway.I will leave the dragged carcass at a different spot from the baitpile.About a 1/4 mile down the trail and may make a couple sets at it if there are animals investigating it.Ravens will also draw attention to it.

Never seen any tracks on my line this year.Last year seen tracks of one passing thru,he never hung around.I believe a couple were caught and reported in the area this year.
They are protected here, and cannot be sold, but can keep incidentals for own use. They get caught in wolf and lynx snares occasionally. If I see signs of one hanging around a bait dump,I close up the snares until it moves on.

There arn't that many around in this part of NE Ontario, and I support them being protected. They are a neat animal to have on the line, and an important part of the ecosystem. They are slowly increasing.i will give them every chance I can.Thankfully I have been able to avoid them when they come thru.Unfortunately several have been caught by other trappers although not on purpose. A trapper brought this one in to the skinning workshop a few years ago.It was caught on the trapline adjacent to my northern line.
it was caught at a jackpot. It broke a lynx snare at the jackpot but could not break the wolf snare.
