My extremely liberal brother-in-law and sister-in-law use to have bitter arguments with me on everything political whenever I stopped to visit, until one day it really erupted verbally. Later that night I felt terrible, I called my brother-in-law and apologized, told him I loved him, and therefore would never talk politics with him again; he agreed. That was three years ago and our relationship now is very close as we both honored our agreement. I would highly recommend you do the same. Family love is much more important than who was right or wrong on political discussions.

If that happened to me, I'd tell them to stick it. I am not going to be intimidared by socialists, family or not. I'd tell them, if they ever get their head out of their arse, we may be family again. The brother swinging on you would have iced the deal. Their loss, your gain!

I was the conservative black sheep growing up in a liberal union family. Get togethers at the holidays were always fun. It was usually me against the rest of them but I never felt outgunned. I enjoyed the exchange. The Civil War pitted brother against brother and our current climate may do so again.

I am lucky. All of my family members, even aunts, uncles and cousins are conservative. As far as I know, even all my 2nd and third cousins, except one woman are conservative. 2 of my more distant cousins write for conservative newspapers and another is running for Republican mayor in West Virginia.

I do have a stepmother, who I don't like, who voted for Gary Johnson.

My friends are conservative too. I have 1 friend whose wife, who is a reporter, who posts liberal crap on Facebook sometimes, I just snooze her.

You need to decide if it's more important to be close to your family or vocal about your political opinions. It's hard to keep ego out of an argument.

Like cancer , liberalism does not discriminate . It's unfortunate that even family can be the enemy of our freedoms and the things we enjoy. It may be hard to accept but at the end of the day , they will vote your freedoms away , despite all the hugs and kisses .

No one can win an argument.

One thing I have learned about discussing politics is that in spite of our different views and no matter how wrong you think the other person is the one thing that you have in common is you love your country. I can just imagine the political differences and arguments our founders had. Probably more caustic then today.
