I have a 3020 and have had 4020 John Deere tractors also. I grew up with John Deere. I know the Ford but the John Deere is way easier to work on. I currently have a 30-20 I use for bailing raking cutting mowing and hauling hay. A lot of the attachments from the 4020 will fit the 3020 so it seems like you could get double duty out of it. John Deere has come a long ways since the 3020 and 4020 models. Those models suck fuel like pigs. John Deere's newer models actually set some fuel economy records.

Got a 5000 Ford that’s tough as nails. It was my Grandfathers. He ordered it in Nov of 73. My employees haven’t torn it up yet. It’s heavy enough to pull but light enough not to sink in our black river land.

I'm glad to see some Ford tractor fans on trapperman. I like the modern New Holland Boomer compact tractors. No real old Ford tractor experience with me.

Is the 3020 the one that can catch fire in middle of the night after you've had it running the day before?

I have never heard of anything like that about them but interested.
I have learned one of the most reliable, trusted tractors for over 50 years has been the John Deere 4020 Diesel tractor. It can work hard, die, be rebuilt, be rebuilt , be rebuilt and keep going. I have heard many farmers say when it was designed - John Deere almost made it last too long...….the 3020 is a similar design just a smaller tractor with almost the same reliability. I am in no way colorblind to tractors - just believe the 4020 and 3020 diesels to be very good tractors. That said - I think Internationals made some of the German diesel 310 motors in their 706s that were extremely good as well.
I also have a Ford 3000 diesel and just like how simple and reliable the Fords seem to be. They also just "feel" good and like you are in control when sitting in them. I am interested in the 5000 as it is just a larger HP of the 3000 that I am used to. I am also interested in the Ford 4610s, 4630, 5600, 5610s if others have experience with any of them.

Is the 3020 the one that can catch fire in middle of the night after you've had it running the day before? It's the newer J.D. tractors that are really bad for catching on fire. But the J. D. fans probably have something similar to say about Ford's. My dad's cousin had a 80- 100 hp. tractor catch fire due to a stupid design. I don't remember the model number unfortunately. But they took it to a junk yard and the junk yard had 2 models exactly the same as this J.D. tractor.
