Because most trappers don't understand the AVERAGE concept. That's all they think about Is the high end figure. And walk away as happy as a pig In crap saying gee I got $50.00 for that coyote.
At a groney stop I asked a coon hunter what his average was he gave me this blank look and said well I got $15.00 on 2 coon and $10.00 on 6 coon . As I looked at his check stub I asked well what about these 20 coon you got $3.00 for? Then he did what most trappers do he started down grading his fur. I think he ended up with a $5.00 average on those green skinned coon. But when he talks to his buddies he's not going to mention the $3.00 coon.

Groney Is a shrewd business man and you can't take that away from him. He will play you like a $10.00 fiddle.

I once made a stop at the rat wagon and placed a jar of Vaseline and a jar of sand on the window ledge. George said what's this about?. I said well I don't know If the screwing I'm going to get Is going rough or smooth so I came prepared. LOL

I agree. But that is the beauty of a free market. I can take my products and sell them elsewhere if I don't like what he is offering. When I bought fur I averaged for a lot, and often times I over paid to kids/women who showed up with put up fur and especially repeat customers with quality goods. It was good business in my opinion. Groney is in to make money, its business not personal. I had people get upset with us for what they said was low balling. I always responded with "chewed up & shot up coons and yotes aren't worth much no mater where you sell." Turns out when I saw them later, I was advised "should have taken the offer" as I offered them more per nose count than they averaged at auction.

I got out of the fur business 8 years ago, was still making money but saw the writing on the wall. I trap now to maintain predators around my farm and do the occasional nuisance job. When fur rebounds, I'll do it again. But I am not afraid to turn away low quality products. I don't envy the guys still buying fur with no way to move it for a foreseeable profit. That is risky business.

So price drops because they can't ship furs into china because of this virus? Wait a minute didn't we just sign a trade deal with china? We can't ship any of our goods to china from the USA? I call bull_ _ _ _ another reason to lower price.

If I heard It once I've heard It a 1000 times well If you don't like this buyers price you can always walk and sell somewhere else. That may have been the case 10 years ago but not In this day and age. And there are lots of trappers who don't put up fur for one reason or another. So that cuts out the auction option since FHA doesn't except green fur. So In lots of areas Groney Is the only option and you don't think that he knows that.
We had at least 5 fur buyers In our area back In the 70s. The competition was strong and groney wasn't even In the picture.

Earlier this year, on this site, where there many "how much is GFW paying for coon" posts. Without fail, every time guys started sharing actual intellectual, beneficial market info, there would be uproar from the trappers who only cared what their garbage carcass coon were worth. By doing so, they are ignorantly contributing to a negative spiral. I see this behavior as damaging in the current market.

I'll never understand how grown adults can so easily fall prey to the top-price hype game as already mentioned. Selling fur is not like a scratch-off ticket, yet it seems trappers are still just throwing their fur on the counter and staring wild-eyed as if it is some type of lottery. I have zero respect for buyers that do this, and they will never get my business. True averages tell a story and are accurate market indicators, but for some reason buyers and many sellers seem to avoid them. There is a buyer in this part of the state telling guys he's paying $100-$120 for good coyotes. By good….he implicitly means western. The average guy hip-snaring rubbed coyotes in his neighbors swamp will never even come close to these prices. Yet, nearly everyday, I have someone tell me they heard coyotes are "worth $100". I again believe that trappers who make no effort to analyze their pile sorted price breakdowns and who perpetuate the top-price hype as also damaging the current market.

The "I sold my fur for nothing and I'm mad about it" argument is invalid. There are plenty of ways to sell fur even in this current situation. If you are unable to put-up your fur, then those who can will begin to fill the niche and put-up for other trappers. That is the way things are leaning at this point. I would almost guarantee that a post on this site looking to pay a trapper in your area to process fur would be successful. Everybody I know that puts up fur will take a dozen of this or that for another guy to make a couple bucks.
The postal service, as well as fed-ex, ups, spee-dee, and the like, will all gladly take a little money to ship your fur wherever your heart desires. Fill up an old NAFA bag with fur, double bag it, triple zip-tie it, and start making calls to see who will ship economically. I will say for $50 or less you could ship a big bag full of fur. Compared to a tank of gas (or more) that is very fair. Especially if a buyer is willing to pay part of the shipping cost.

If demand drops off in January, where do all those buyers that show up at the Canadian Auctions at the end of February ( and pay top prices) and yet again in MAY come from?

So your going to hire a put up man to do your fur. Most put up men I know charge around $7.00 to put up a beaver and know your going to turn around and sell It for $8.00 if your lucky. Most will charge $4.00 just to scrape and board a coon and coyotes will cost you $10.00 or more. The only man making any money In the skin game Is going to be the put up man.

I did It for NAFA for over 12 years.

Beav, do you recall someone named Greg that was running the truck for GFW? At least I think his name was Greg. He always treated me right. But there's been a someone else running the truck the past several years. I refuse to sell to him.

I only posted so everyone had a chance to decide if they wanted to keep their coon in the freezer "til next season or sell for way less than expected. I believe there are LARGE areas in China that are quarantined, no in or out movement. Possibly that's why they can't get the coon hides into China.
I'm just reporting what I was told. Rats and coons...……………..down. Beaver and coyotes...………….stable.
Beav has a good point. If' you are going to have someone put up your fur, do the economics first.

Yep....and there is plenty to made on coyotes, castor is higher than ever, and if a trapper wants to "make" anything on coon then they need to put them up themselves.

My point was that the days of just trap whatever and sell it for profit are over. Each trapper should make an effort to learn what is going on with the market, what makes sense for them to do as far as catching, put-up, etc., and the logistics of how what will sell for them and where.

Everything doesn't have to be an argument, every time.
