Prayers sent. Contact the National Alzheimer's Association. Find a group that meets for spouses and children who haves loved ones who are suffering from the disease. Sounds like your mother could use the support. And it is free.

I think the worst part of this is that my father has great grandchildren that in his state are an annoyance rather than a virtue. It makes me very sad. I have been struggling with the selfish thoughts of becoming this way when I get to be his age. I never want to become this and would end it if I knew it was about to happen. I would prefer not existing rather than existing without a purpose. I feel bad making this tragedy about myself but I can't really help it. My mind wonders.

I BELIEVE IN MY GOD, MY COUNTRY AND IN MYSELF.

Be strong. Your Mom needs you to be strong.
Don't dwell on how sad it makes you. If he is not violent and just needs to be tended to, even as though he were a child, you are already blessed in a very real way.
I have been through this with my grandfather, and at the time I was sad about it, but helped out where I could. I owed him that and much more for the positive impact he had on my life.
As I said, I was sad about it at the time, but after he passed, it was absolutely amazing how soon it was that I forgot about the tough days, and only recalled the good times.
This is true to this day.

I like to think we'll get the answers and it will all make sense someday.
Prayers from here for you and your family, Finster.

My sister-in-law has an elderly aunt with dementia that who she is taking care of. She got Hospice care for her aunt even though it could be several years or even more before she passes. Apparently, Hospice can get involved with dementia patients even if it isn’t considered Alzheimer’s and can be years before the person passes. It helped with the burden.
