Wages are way higher in remote communities for the few jobs that are available due to isolation and northern allowances. That’s one reason why so many people count on hunting and trapping to help make a living. Excess harvest can be sold or traded with working folks who might want country food but don’t have time to go harvesting for themselves. People help each other. Celebrities crying about stopping the seal hunt etc have no idea how important that food source is to locals. I know a lot of people complain about northerners hunting like why get 10-12 caribou or 2-3 moose at a time but once they see the cost of living it should make sense. Plus there’s more animals than people so it’s not doing any harm to the herds. Even for myself with a good job I hunt to make ends meet. I’m not paying $90 for a beef roast when I can go get a couple moose close to town for a similar price (if I’m successful that is)
One year my mom asked the store manager why is a tomato $8?
He replied that it had to be flown in.
She asked if the tomato had it own seat on the plane.
When I drive down to Whitehorse I load every nook and cranny of my truck full with staple items like laundry soap, dish soap, ammunition, cereal, kids snacks, juice mix, etc and etc.
