Well its all over the news they have a bill up in Illinois to keep people from pumping their own gas. My question is how much will gas go up and how much are supposed to tip the attendant?

Oregon has the same thing and I think it is because of safety. Most stations tell you not to leave the pump while filling your tank and I have seen at least a half dozen times where folks to this the pump does not shut off for what ever reason and the gas floods the pump area. Twice I have shut off the pump for folks that were in shopping. Can you imagine the guy on the next pump smoking which your not supposed to do. I guess you cant fix stupid put up signs and when the insurance goes up or your business does well try something else.

I wish they would have them ring up groceries and bag instead. I have no desire to work in a grocery store, but don't mind pumping my own gas.

A year or two ago, I heard gas stations were looking into using robots to open your tank and pump gas. What happened to that?

When I went to Alaska it was that way too.

Thousands of gallons of gas are pumped everyday at do it yourself pumps without complications. This is a solution looking for a problem.

Why should a gas station owner be mandated to create a job that isn't neccessary?

Can't pump your own gas in NJ either. Almost nobody even tries. If I'm at a smaller station, I'll jump out and start my own and the attendant always hurries over to see what I'm doing but usually leaves me alone. At the big gas stations they get real upset if you try to pump your own. I have no idea why it's the law here.

It seems like a silly law but I don't think there is room to question the work ethic of those employed to do the work.

I pump my own gas here in Oregon. That's cuz I have a fleet card because i'm a business person.

We had full service stations when I was a kid in the 70's but has been self service since the late 70's.

It won't effect me. If, god forbid, I ever have to enter that state, I fill up in Iowa so I never have to stop in Illinois.

I liked the old days where you pulled up to the pump and the guy came out with a uniform on,pumped your gas,checked the oil,washed the windshield,and kicked the tires.
They used to be called a "service" station because they provided a service.

In the seventies I pumped gas. At two different gas stations I don't think it affected the cost of gas.
I think the fuel taxes. Are out of whack.

I think its something with the firemarshall thinking it will go up in flames if u pump your own gas. At least that's what I have been told. Makes me feel weird for not giving the person a tip, but I can do it myself. Plus I have to make sure the guy puts diesel in and not reg gas.

Makes sense. There are no other problems in that state to tackle.
