Last week I asked if anyone knew of a way to clean coins I had found metal detecting in water. I tried a few suggestions, but nothing seemed to work very well. But, another person let me know an easy way to clean stained coins that makes them look like new that they had seen on the internet.
First, rinse the coins in water. Next, dump the water and pour in CLR Agitate them in the CLR for a couple minutes. Them let them soak in the CLR for about 10 more minutes. Strain the coins from the CLR. Rinse with cold water. Coins looked like new ones. Saw it on the internet. Works like magic.
I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.

Any before and after pic's them coins?? I got pile them black clad coins picked from water with detector..Clean no grit or crud, but black and never worried about.. Can't say ever got turned down using one or taking to credit union. The credit union I used quit counting peoples change for free for a while.. Knew the guy that ran it at time said cost so much to maintain machine with dirty coins messing it up almost daily... They must have gotten enough complaints because my son just took his yearly collection. Beer pitcher full pocket change from bar coins. They ran them cashed him out no charge, no problem.

CLR stands for Calcium, Lime, Rust. It is a remover of these 3 elements. I tried using my rock tumbler with corn cob media and Brasso. I left the coins overnight and none of the crud came off, but the coins were nice and shiny.

I'm still not sure why you would go through the trouble of cleaning coins before bringing them into the bank.
Easy solution if the bank won't count your change for free, put it up on the counter with a deposit slip and tell them you want to deposit $500 or whatever. They can count it or just give you $500! I have about 50 pounds of coins I found metal detecting; most of them in the water. If they've been in the water a long time, they usually are stained or dark brown. I went to two different banks and showed them the coins. Neither bank would take them unless they were cleaned.

Mac My daughter found the cleaning process on the internet. I don't know what site she found it on, only that it seemed to work really well when we watched it. One thing they did say was to be sure to do this procedure outside as CLR is nasty stuff.

Fair enough. Pretty sure their coin counters detect the coin's size to sort them out, so as long as they're not muddy and full of crud it shouldn't matter what color they are. But like someone else posted, maybe dirty coins are causing maintenance issues. A madon jar with some dirty coins mixed in isn't as much of a problem as a bucket of all dirty looking coins.
The question is, did you pay for the CLR with dirty coins?!

You should see the crud that comes off those coins.
