I have a 2011 Ford F-150 with just shy of 150,000 miles on it. I use conventional Mobil 5000 5w20 and change my oil every 3,000 miles. I use the Motocraft 500s filter every change.

When I change filter and the oil I get roughly 6 quarts or just shy of in my pan. It takes 8 quarts, so it’s “consuming” a little over two quarts every 3,000 miles. No external leaks, no white/blue exhaust clouds to show a major burn off.

Anyone else that change their own oil on this motor notice the same results?

Now knock on wood this truck has been good to me minus the body rust.

Did you check the oil levels BEFORE you drained it? Don't forget the filter holds some oil in it, usually about 1 qt or a little more.

Yes, it still shows just above the add mark at 3,000 miles. I dump what’s in the filter into the pan and whatever runs out. Not sure if what the filter has absorbed at that point counts for much more?

That has always been a mystery to me. It seems I can never get out what I put in. If it shows full on the dipstick before you drain it, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

A you sure it takes 8 qts? It sounds like a lot for a 5.0.

Absolutely. I have it highlighted right in the manual. I believe all the 5.0’s have 8 quarts. Or at least everyone I know with one. My wife’s edge takes 6 quarts.

If it's still above the add mark I wouldn't worry too much about it. The filter holds some, even after you drain it. If you still a hole in the filter you'll get more out, if you want to measure it. The manufacturers usually have some ridiculous spec for oil consumption, usually the consider something like burning a quart in 700 miles acceptable.

not sure on the 5.0 but the 5.4 when they get 150K+ start using about a half quart to a quart by your next oil change 3K-3500 miles

at 200K I was using a quart about 2K miles

at >250K i am a quart about every 1500 miles

I been changing my oil for 47 yrs now and u never get out what u put in and its not burning it. U will smell it if it is. Filter has check valve to keep oil in it, all kinds of places in motor for it to lay, especially if not setting perfectly level.

My wifes Journey uses about 2 quarts between changes now. Its gotten to the point I need to add a quart every month or so or it’ll run out. Its done this since it was just a few years old with less than 50k miles. It just under 100k now. No leaks and no obvious smoke.

18 years working at a Ford dealership here. We haven’t had any of the 5.0L using oil that I can remember. Is the engine at operating temperature each time you drop the oil? Have you checked the level on the dipstick before and after the oil change? How does it compare? That engine takes 7.75 qts.

Aright I had the chance to get back to you Nelson45. Before our trip I changed oil and filter. Dip read top of the hash below the top hole. 2,800 miles later all highway, it barely wets the tip.

I don't know where it's going but if it was mine I would definitely be checking it more often and adding before it's that low.

My 2015 Chebby doesn't use any oil after 100000 miles. Change it every 5000 miles. 5.3 liter
