"Chinese chicken" will soon have a whole new meaning, as the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently gave the green-light to four chicken processing plants in China, allowing chicken raised and slaughtered in the U.S. to be exported to China for processing, and then shipped back to the U.S. and sold on grocery shelves here.
The actual arrangement will take some time to set in, however. "All this means is that we've deemed China's poultry processing equivalent to the process in the United States," says Arianne Perkins, USDA public affairs specialist. Individual companies will still have to be certified, something Perkins says has not happened yet.
While the logistics are hard to imagine-if we can't safely leave chicken out for the length of a family picnic, how can it be shipped halfway around the world and back with no ill effects?-the USDA is doing its best to reassure both chicken farmers and consumers that the process is 100-percent safe.
"The Food Safety and Inspection Service's number-one priority is always food safety," Perkins says. In the official memo, the FSIS says that "all outstanding issues have been resolved"-a pretty big promise considering that in the past year alone China has made news for passing off rat meat as mutton, selling sausages filled with maggots, inexplicably finding thousands of dead pigs floating in the waters of Shanghai, and even having an outbreak of the H7N9 bird flu in live poultry.

"We do have a concern about safety," National Chicken Council senior vice president Bill Roenigk said in a statement. "But we've been assured and reassured by the USDA that they will do 100-percent testing on poultry products from China. We have confidence that the USDA will do that testing and do it in a good and adequate manner."

However Perkins adds that while there will be increased testing on the chicken before re-entering the U.S., they will not be doing any on-site monitoring or testing in China, a fact that Rep. Rosa De Lauro (D-Conn.) said in a statement is "deeply worrisome" for American consumers. Even worse, a report just this month from the United States Government Accountability Office found that the USDA's domestic poultry inspections have a lot of problems anyhow, as they are in the process of replacing certified-USDA inspectors with those provided by the poultry companies themselves.

In addition to the concerns that this decision could open the door for even more unsafe practices, no country-of-origin labels are required under the new rules, so consumers won't know where their bird is coming from. Plus industry insiders warn that the move is politically motivated by a desire to get China to re-allow lucrative U.S. beef imports and will likely lead to allowing imports of Chinese chickens, a practice that's been banned since bird flu and other food safety concerns first surfaced.
All of this has many recommending to buy local so you know your dinner is safe and 100-percent all-American.

Nothing is 100% safe....even if processed in the USA.

I'll tell ya what is "deeply worrisome" is having people like Rosa De Lauro in congress !

It's not like people are going to eat this stuff raw ! FCOL people do cook things before eating.

Now if we were talking about Chinese sushi I would have a different opinion

When I read the label on processed food I want to have some assurance that the label is accurate. No thanks to food processed in China.

I foresee the possibility of Chinese virologists coming up with a slow to show symptoms, extremely lethal virus, vaccinating all the Chinese people they want to save, placing the virus in thousands of tons of food shipped all over the US and rest of the world and becoming the world's only super power.

I certainly share your mistrust of the Democrats ..OOPS I mean the Chinese....... and I am not a virologist by any stretch..........but I doubt a virus would survive that long and under those conditions

Parvovirus, for instance can live in soil for over a year and take freezing temperatures. I am sure there are tougher viruses than Parvo. I would think a virologist could splice hardy viruses to less hardy ones to make very hardy, virulent ones.

my daughter has birds. lots of them. ducks geese peabirds of multiple varietys. raises and sells rabbits along with chickens. maybe i need to pay her to raise me about 50 a year. when i was a kid i did not like chicken killing day. wet feathers, guts, burning off pin feathers all stink. i like eating them but it always took several days after a chicken killing before i wanted to eat one. i still dont like those smells. can buy thigh/drumsticks in 10 pound sacks at walmart way cheaper than you can raise them yourself. i guess there is just not going to be any more cheap meat you can trust. might have to buy those ridiculously high priced deer tags ks sells. fishing license i still come out way ahead on though

Took this out of the freezer yesterday. Bought a show pig from a little girl whose dad went to school with my kids. I didnt feed it or anything but I trust him not to sell me a hog loaded up with antibiotics or something. I like buying already dressed chicken at the grocery store but there are options. This China thing happens I won't buy anymore. I can't figure out how its cheaper to ship birds from s.mo, ar, la, ok to china, dress them and ship them back, cheaper than paying those poverty stricken americans and mexicans to do it here at home.

Try not to buy any meat from Wally World or any grocery store for that matter. Buy a beef and a hog or two a year from local farmers that are fed out right with no additives. America is setting itself up for a pandemic in my opinion doing this kind of crap. May pay a titch more for meat this way but you get hamburgers that don't shrink to half there original size when cooking them and a lot better taste.

The only way it costs more to buy a live hog or steer is if you don;t butcher it yourself and even then it shouldn't cost more. Look in your newspapers commodity report to find out the price of fat cattle or butcher hogs.

Your right that it shouldn't cost more but most of the butcher shops around here went up on their processing charges this last year. 3 or 4 of us have got together and butchered in a 2-3 day marathon. A ton of work but good times with good people. All the beer and whiskey increases the price per pound doing it that way 😃

Beyond the safety concerns, which I agree with. Think about the Supply Chain logistics involved in shipping a $2.00 chicken to China for processing and then back, I'm sure a bean counter came up with a huge labor savings and capital equipment cost savings but net net, the variable costs would offset any savings not withstanding safety and scheduling concerns. What's the mode of shipment, refrigerated containers, port-to-port, 30 day trip there and 30 day trip back on the water??? Air Freight takes 3-5 days between scheduling, clearance and receipt and would cost the price of the chicken to transact it. Sounds like a great idea frown

Once the door is wide open to sending our chickens back from China after they have been processed, it will be an easy step to stop using our chickens and replace them with ones raised in China.

What good does a $15 hour minimum wage do if we ship all the jobs to china for cheap labor ?

I figured they would do it like they done with lumber.
Buy logs and ship it out in international water and
saw it up and then ship it back as lumber. What is it,
12 miles out ? They have it figured out...
