Dr. Allman is a wonderfully humble and gifted professor here at Dallas Theological Seminary.
His sermon on God's biblically defined "good" may be of interest to my trapping brothers and sisters.
Thought I'd share grin

Got it!
Link should work now.
Dr. Allman is a blend of brilliance, humility, humor, and one who doesn't take everything so serious on one hand, but is absolutely confident on certain matters on the other hand.

You're welcome Charlie.
Dr. Allman is a rare pastor/teacher of the Word that can quote Scripture like very few others, yet makes you feel like you're the smartest one in the conversation!
Wonderful example of what humility can look like.

Wanna Be,
As a matter of fact, I have heard that name as Lewis S. Chafer, the man who founded DTS in 1924, wrote a book that was challenged by John Rice back in the 1940's. Chafer wrote the book about 1910 or so. Rice read it years later, didn't like it, and campaigned to get the publisher to agree to not print any more copies. The publisher refused.

It's titled "True Evangelism: Winning hearts through prayer." Chafer was opposed to the immorality of the fundamentalists who preached God's word, but were not very good examples of the Christian faith in the early 1900's. It was a big revival era, and a bit too much of "anything goes" by those preaching from the pulpit as long as they have converts coming in, was distasteful to Chafer and other evangelicals. They eventually persevered against many "interesting" preachers during those early 1900's as quite a few withdrew from the pastorate.

I have several books by John R. Rice. He was a good man (can I say that in this thread) that passed on many years ago.

Humility should force us to remember that the Pharisees (Levites - religious leaders of the OT era - rabbis) would memorize Hebrew teachings as part of their ordination processes...
yet some of them, well taught in the 613 Hebrew Laws and fluent in all - including the memorization of every word,
handed Christ over to Pilate for His crucifixion.

God's Word should dwell in our hearts, but shouldn't be used as a prideful sword.

We do good works because we are saved not to get saved.
Salvation is through faith in Jesus and His grace not by works. I can not be good enough to be saved.

You are spot on Ron Marsh.

Titus 3: 5-7
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

At the core, believing in the good works of humans as a means to salvation, diminishes the saving Grace of Christ.
When you bolster man's ability's, you reduce the power of the atoning blood at the cross.

No man is good without Christ in him. To think one is good flies in the face of the scriptures that say we are filthy rags. LLL
