I think you wont like my opinion but sorry. I think it was pretty stressful on the cat when it didnt need to be. It also could have been worse. With all the info on tman and the net I think you could have been better prepared to deal with it. Maybe its too early and my mind isnt working well but thats what i see. Check out strike2x videos on releasing cats. We can all learn from each other. Actually,I commend strike for his tactics. Until I saw how he released cats I probably would have thought this was a fair release, but i feel strike2x raised the bar.
Using a catch pole is difficult but works. Good job. The last one we released I used a tote over the cat. Worked really well but we don't always carry a tote either.

Last one I released I used a cage trap as a barrier I just pushed the cat back until the foot came out from under the cage and popped the MJ open. Then I hoped it went the other way and it did.

For the first time I thought it was good, it all depends on the location of the set, the gal drove right up to the set. I like the tote method, the shield method looked good. But I am sure there are guys/ and gal that have no trouble with a live stick. JMO

I have used the board, tote and catch pole had good results with all but not all of us drive our pick up to the set. I always carry a catch pole on my atv, ever try and carry a board through the woods and brush or even have a tote sticking up to catch all the brush. I try and to get the leg in if I can but not snug down enough to hold and get release over as fast as possible. There is always going to be stress on the cat.

Thanks. It was our first time and inly our second yesr of trapping. I would have never guessed i would have wanted to let one go instead of keeping it. I will definetely look into a board, tote, ect. The last thing i would wsnt is for a cat to run off after a release and die
