I thought I had read that some folks had had issues with the old Monty rj on coon. Been searching can’t find anything on the topic. Don’t remember even what the issue was. Looking for anyone with first hand experience on these traps for coon, good or bad?

Thanks

The main trouble was the smooth rounded jaws. Coons have tapered feet and when wet they slip out of the smooth jaws, also the smooth jaws don't "bite down" on the remains of the toes after a coon chews if he decided to. They will hold coons but you'll lose a % that you would of held with a more square jaw face like to see on Duke 1.5's. They are terrific fox traps.

Well If I remember right those traps had a real nice rounded jaw edge. And being around jaw they was lots of room for the coon to chew.
I had probably 10 doz of the 1 1/2 size and they were a great fox trap.

Good land trap, keep'em away from water.

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Great canine trap, held plenty of fox, both red and grays when we still had them around here in better numbers, and even held the coyotes when I started running into them in the late 80's and early 90's before switching to #2 RJ's. They held their share of coon on land, and if my memory serves me right, when Blackie was running his canoe line, that was his go to trap. Would have to go back and check his book for sure.

If you're having pull outs, it's likely the coon are grabbing onto something for leverage.

What ADC said.

That said, coon vary quite abit from the north to the south. Our northern coon are a lot bigger and pull a lot harder than the southern coon do so we northerners' lost coon in anything with rounded jaws ...where a southern coon trapper might not have issues.

You start to see a much smaller coon starting about mid Missouri. Get down to Missisippi and they all look like runt YOY.

I like catching coon (and don't have enough fox here to trap anymore) so I got traded of all my Monty's for Dukes.
