I don't know why anyone would want to sell there hard earned catch to a country buyer. Why sell to one buyer when it's in his best interest to pay you as little as he can so he can go and re sell your pelts for as much as he can later. Why not put you hard earned catch infront of hundreds of Fur buyers all bidding on your pelts. Remember it's in the auction houses best interest to sell your fur for as high as they can. Unlike country buyers. FHA has your best interest at heart. Plus they are run and owned by trappers. For trappers! But heck if you like throwing your money to pigs all the power to you.

By the time commission, shipping, drumming and any other fees are taken off the price all of the sudden is equally to the local buyer and I get money the same day so I can continue to run my line since that is how I pay for it. After being burned by NAFA I will not send fur anywhere.

Wish I had more time to trap....

I'm afraid there won't be 100s of buyers bidding on your fur at the FHA auction. WE can only hope It's a great auction and those that have fur there will be happy.
Hopefully there won't be a fire sale or lots of buybacks.

Remember guys lots of these country prices are on GREEN fur . FHA doesn't except green fur so It's the country buyer or no buyer.

Is this experience talikng?

I used to be a big proponent of the auction houses. Down south we have not had many other marketing options so shipping to them was the only way to sell fur.

But, many times there is too long of a wait for your fur to sell. I like getting paid when I deliver.

Thanks to Groeny (he isn't a country buyer...they're travelling buyers to most of us) coming annually into the deep south it is easier to move southern fur. Its low priced but its moving. And yeah...I know if Groeny slows it's back to shipping or stop all together trying to move southern fur.

Btw, I'd wager that the prices I receive compares to auction prices as no commission...and no beaver or otter scraping/drying.

There will be hundreds of buyers at the auction. And there will be no fire sale. Whoever is pushing this doom and gloom crap can take a hike. Seriously. And I have sold 1000s of pelts I've been trapping since I was veary young. With my father and grand father. I am a furrier as well as a Trapper and I have attended many auctions over the years. I also know how the game works in the industry as I am apart of it. We buy hundreds of pelts every year at auction and then get them dressed for garment making. Any way I'm not arguing. I'm just stating facts. If you want the best price sell at auction. If you want to get ripped off sell to a country buyer. Plain and simple. But some US like getting craped on.

You have a level of confidence not seen on Trapperman threads about the auction houses in a while. Please come back on here after the FHA/NAFA auction has concluded.

Hundreds of buyers at the auction?? Are you counting all the warm bodies at the sale or are you counting those that are bidding in the auction room?

With the sale being held in Toronto there will be lots of extra people there. Family members, etc. if this Chinese virus thing gets resolved before the middle of March, you will see lots of people that attend the sale just to go shopping down town. Eaton Center, etc.

Also, I can show you any number of times when prices at the country sales have been higher than the sales in Canada. Otter at the Oregon sales is one example.

Most country dealers try to treat the Trappers fairly. They want to buy fur from them year after year.

It’s easy to sit at a computer and make bold statements. It is another thing to put your money where your mouth is in the auction room.

Jackson 129890- Don't get me wrong, I think the big auction houses have been a good thing when many dozens of buyers showing up and they really want to compete. I sold the little amount of fur I catch through NAFA from May 2013 through last year and generally, except a couple of years, did ok. So, I get the auction house thing.

But, I think the auction house is more culturally ingrained in Canada than in the U.S., some of it just comes from some geographical conditions. The U.S. has 8 times the people as Canada so there's just a lot more absolute potential for "country" fur buyers to be out and about. The second thing is the U.S. has a lot more roads, with only a few regions fairly isolated, not so in Canada so a "collection spot" culture grew, going all the way back to Hudson Bay Company. The "collection spot" culture in the U.S. went out a long time ago. You all also have a federal government that actually signs treaties and talks about the fur trade because trapping is still important to the deep rural and subsistence lifestyles of the Canadian "bush". Nothing really like that here except in a few locations, I've never heard of any big American politician talk about the fur industry, except a few libs who want to kill it. As long as trappers and buyers aren't violating USF&W or inter-state commerce laws, the federal government really isn't into much of the fur trade.

I hope the FHA auctions do well, I really do. But this is a very strange year with all the unknowns. Good luck in March!!
