I'm guessing that was in either Sweden Finland or Northwest Russia. It looked like one of the hunting dogs they use in that part of the world. I'm guessing the dog is okay in the wolf is probably dead.

Do you get in trouble if your dogs kill wolves? I have a Kangal and 2 Kangal crosses. Kangals are bred to kill wolves. Traditionally, male Kangals were not bred unless they killed 2 wolves together in a pit fight. 2 male Kangals were expected to kill 6 wolves together. Kangals have the highest bite power of any canine. Over 3 times the psi of a pitbull. The males commonly weigh more than 220 in an athletic weight. They grab other canines by the head or throat. They are not aggressive, but are protective. It seems like it would be a good idea to run a couple of Kangals with your hunting dogs in areas with wolves. I used to run one "thumper" dog with beagles in areas where I had trouble with coyotes. I never lost a beagle or had one attacked after that. I need to take some new pictures of my Kangal, Thor. He has matured into a very impressive animal. Keith

You need a pay loader to pick up the poo . Thor eats 2 full coffee cans of dog food a day when it's cold. He lays an impressive pile. I gave him the neck bones all the way down to the last rib of a decent sized buck, after most of the meat was cut off and there were only a few splinters of bone the next day. Keith

I read an article from (I believe) a Calgary paper that said that wolf had been around the area for a couple of weeks. The owner & his brother were the folks taking the video, deputy dumb butt let his dog out while they were video taping the wolf. In the video that I watched the wolf grabbed the dog, shook him & the brother popped off a shotgun & the wolf dropped the dog & left.
Not as bad as I could be, not as good as I should be.

One Big Beautiful Dog! Keith Thanks. Thor is 6' 6" on his back legs. His half brother Sherman is 6' 2". Thor is outside and Sherman inside. When you knock on our door Sherman stands up and pulls down a blanket that is over the window on the door, that is hung with velcro. It's like looking at a werewolf. At 6' 2" Sherman is taller than most people. Nobody is standing on our porch, by the time we get to the door. People usually stand back about 30 feet or more. Thor was 2 back in August. He should continue growing until he is about 5. If you have a farm, I highly recommend getting livestock guardian dogs. They make a huge difference with predator issues. They intimidate thieves and bad people too. Running a couple livestock guardian dogs with your hounds, birdogs, fiests and curs should keep your hunting dogs alive in areas infested with wolves. Huge dog Keith. What do they weigh? How is their personality? Friendly to strangers or aggressive? Thor is probably between 200 and 220 right now. I don't have anything big enough to weigh him on. Thor's half brother Sherman, who is half Kangal/half Great Pyrenees and neutered weighed 238 on a scale in town a few years ago. Sherman was very fat and got fatter and probably weighed in around the mid 240s at his heaviest. We put Sherman on a diet and got him down to probably a little over 200, which is a much better weight. Sherman will badly overeat if given the opportunity. Diane failed to lock the lid on one of those short blue barrels, with locking lids, that we have and Sherman ate almost the entire barrel of dog food, while we were gone, probably a little over 30 pounds. He was miserable. He kept moaning and I had to take him out almost every hour of the night. Thor is intact and does not overeat. Their father weighs a little over 220. He is in his mid teens, slightly obese and owned by someone else. Most adult male Kangals average around 150. The bigger ones, that are more specifically bred for killing wolves in Turkey and the Caucus are usually 220 or more. The smaller Kangals have an average bite force of 743PSI, which is more than an African lion or any other dog breed. The largest Kangals have more massive heads and even stronger bite forces. Kangals are protective but not really aggressive. They will bark and look scary, but are hesitant to bite, unless trained to or provoked by having something threaten or attack what they want to protect. Kangals are very loving and gentle with goat kids, human kids and lambs. They tried to use Kangals for police work, but had trouble getting them to bite on just command. They would bite if the assailant acted aggressively towards the handler. Kangals had the bad tendency once provoked of grabbing the assailant by the head or neck. My head easily fits in both Sherman and Thor's mouths and I have a big head. Sherman really likes people if I am okay with them. I keep Thor away from most people, because I want him to protect the farm. Sherman lays against the door to the house when I am outside and against the bedroom door at night. I never taught or encouraged him to do it. There are lots of videos on line of Kangals killing wolves by themselves and in groups. There are videos of them rolling tigers and African lions too. Keith

Beautiful pup you got there! What got you into the breed? Thanks. We have goats and a farm where I raise a large number of birds and I needed a livestock guardian dog to protect the goats and to kill or drive off predators. Trapping only goes so far. My friend Dwight is friends with a woman named Sharon who raises Kangals and Kangals/Great Pyrenees crosses, as well as a lot of birds, goats and sheep. Sharon sold Sherman as a pup to someone who neutered him and kept him in the house. Sherman grew to large for them. Sharon got Sherman back and had no use for him and asked Dwight if he wanted him to protect his Scottish blackface sheep, birds and minature zebu. Dwight knew I was looking for an LGD and gave Sharon my number. Sharon gave Sherman to me. He likes and protects livestock, but likes people more, so he ended up becoming a house dog. Sherman is so big that for weeks after we got him, I would occasionally laugh just looking at him. He kind of reminded me of a big guy in a dog suit like the TV show Wilfred. I needed a true LGD and Sharon had an extra young male, so she generously gave me Thor. When I got Thor, Sharon had 8 around 200 pound dogs to feed outside, plus 2 hundred pound plus, young ones. Her feed bill had to be terrible. After watching Sherman and now Thor in action, I have become really impressed with Kangals. They are very vigilant. They seem to have better hearing, smell and sight then my other dogs and they are very gentle. They don't seem to have any meanness in them, but will kill stuff they catch alarming my animals. I usually keep at least a few guineas in every barn and my dogs know to run to my barns if they hear the guineas call. They respond quickly to goat and chicken distress noises too. They will gently clean up newborn goat kids if given a chance. They are very affectionate with us. Keith

What does your feed bill run per month? I have 4 inside dogs, a coyote and 2 outside dogs, plus some mice, that all eat dogfood. I go through 6 to 8 50 pound bags of dogfood a month. In hot weather, their feed consumption goes down a lot. I give Thor 1 coffee can of food, plus a little more most days and 2 cans on really cold days. He gets cracked eggs most days too. I feed the TSC green bag and buy a bunch when I get the 10% and 20% off coupons, so I generally pay just under $15.00 a bag. My feed bill is terrible overall. It varies a lot by what I am raising at anyone time and temperature. Right now, besides the dog food, everyday we feed 3 bales of hay, around 15 pounds of goat pellets, around 120 pounds of 16% layer mash, half a can of cat food and 4, 5 gallon buckets of corn. Last Winter I fed much more. Keith
