Ok wait! Great pic first of all! But shouldn’t the water be frozen this time of year there? I would have though Idaho was cold and frozen similar to Manitoba. Maybe not as cold but still frozen.
Cold as ice!

JP, we've been unseasonably warm this winter and this is the biggest lake in Idaho and in my 3 winters here I've only seen it totally freeze over twice. Really too bad as some good ice would make trapping a few beaver colonies easily accessible. Supposed to be in the teens at night the next few nights so it will be froze again. I was actually waiting for you to chime in and say that you don't ever set traps at sunset because after sunset comes dark and you don't want to be out with the critters in the pitch black.
Colter that's one heckuva sunset! Love the colors.

LOL!!! Actually I’ve been trapping till about half hour to an hour after dark the last few weeks cause my line is quite larger than normal this year. Scary as heck, but talking out loud to myself at some sets seems to help!
Last Saturday was an awesome full moon and a clear sky and I actually drove really slow at some spots to stare at the moon and take it in. Got an uneasy feeling at a bait pile as the sun went down too.
Today I was out till after dark again and decided not to check my last 3 traps. I don’t mind driving the sled in the dark, it’s walking through the bush a couple hundred yards that gets me!
Cold as ice!

Colter that's one heckuva sunset! Love the colors. I well know Lake Pend Oreille...being the huge coast line that it is, and especially the fifth deepest lake in the nation, there have been few times it has frozen over completely...even in the most frigid of winters. The only lake the Navy tests its subs in...amazing. The base next to the lake is something to see. In very very cold winters, with enough weeks below 0 , it will freeze over along bays , inlets into open water , but theres always places where undercurrents keep areas of open water , or in the coldest of times, very thin ice in center. Its been a while since Ive seen it frozen over almost completely. Lovely shot of it...not often that lake surface is seen that calm.

It froze over completely last year with sub zero temps in February and several days of wind chills at -15 to -20. But within 2 days or so was open again. My first winter here it froze over all around the Long Bridge but I don't think it did over on the east side of the lake.
