I know 99% of you won’t have a clue (like me) but someone on here always has the answer. I saw these two small growths on each pad on the rear paws of a Marten I caught. Does every Marten have these or are they warts or something?
I’ve never dug down through the fur on their paws before, but this time I wanted to see their pads. Didn’t see any on the front paws. Just fur growing in a different pattern which seemed to form a “pad”.

Maybe White17 or Gulo or Boco will know what they are?

Lick 'em and let us know what they taste like, maybe that will offer a clue.

Then they have got to be grips or glands or something that is supposed be there. Not a wart or something wrong. Can't wait to find out the answer.

That's normal but I don't know what it is. I have no doubt that Gulo will know

Marten feet are pretty difficult to see detail on them. If you get the foot completely soaked then you can separate the hair and see the pads easily. They look like tiny little pink beans.

I finished tanning this Marten today and dug down to see the pad. It was fairly easy to find the pad while being wet. Freaked me out a bit when I saw these things staring at me lol.
I wasn’t sure if I should cut them off or if they’re part of the pad, so I thought I’d ask.

I’d like to know what their purpose is.

Since they are on the rear feet my fist guess would be some sort of tactile enhancement to provide better traction ........if not that, then perhaps a scent gland or a sweat gland of some sort

Some sort of scent gland would make most sense to me especially since the fur is so much longer and thick I can’t see how these would aid it in any way with maneuverability.
That’s just my thinking though.

I think we need to pursue this question.

Here's a bit of my thinking.

Marten have the ability to rotate their back legs at the hip socket ...so they can have their feet flat on a tree trunk when descending head first. Squirrels are the only other critter that I KNOW OF that can also do this.

We know that marten spend a lot of time in trees but not necessarily to catch squirrels. Fishers eat far more squirrels than marten do. I wonder if either squirrels or fisher have these little things on their back toes also ??

I've never handled a fisher and never looked on a squirrel.

If they are scent glands......why not put them on the front feet ? Why not on all feet ? We know that marten have a large scent type gland on their belly so why would they also need them on their feet ??

I still think whatever they are is related to sensing what they are walking on or gripping and is somehow related to traction when climbing, jumping, descending.

Lets have some more ideas and reports of seeing similar things on other animals.

Maybe an oil gland for the fur.
