Friend sent me this picture from northern Wisconsin by the UP he says Bigger than a cat smaller than a dog. About a foot and a half to 2 feet apart . And there in the snow maybe 3 inches deep.
What do you think it is? [Linked Image]

Hard to tell without being there but my guess is,due to stride length etc,it is probably a coyote, carrying something. It is even possible that it could have a broken cable restraint, dangling. If he sees it again, with the same drag mark, that could be it,otherwise,I'd say it may be carrying prey.

I once tracked a gray fox in a skiff of snow, with a drag mark.It holed up under a bunch of large boulders.I was able to get it and it was wearing a #2 longspring with no name tag.The drag mark I was seeing was the chain.

Possum, they swish their butts as they walk and the tail drags to make the mark.

A coyote's tail will not register in 3" of snow.I think it's feet are Ok.I believe it is either carrying something in it's mouth or a cable is hanging from it's neck.Probably one of Beav's laugh

If those are drag marks how can they be so precisely the same on both sides of the animals body unless it is a tail dragging from an animals natural stride?

When the right, front leg comes forward, the object shifts to the left. When the left front leg comes forward, the object shifts to the right. That is why I think the object is centered, either held by the mouth or dangling from the neck. The tracks ate not erratic so I am sure, there is nothing on any of the feet.

In 60 years of trapping,I have never seen a canine tail show drag marks like that and NO,an oppossum does not have an 18" stride.
