I have a 1996 murcury 90 horse 3 cylander. Took it out first time this year and ran good for about a 20 minute trip at wide open throttle.shut it down to an idle and idled for prolly 5 minutes or so and turned around to head back to the ramp and when I went to full throttle it would bog and never would get the boat on plane. Starts and idles fine. Eaven runs good at mid throttle but at full throttle just bogs down. I put new plugs and checked primer bulb and filters and still same problem. Also checked carb bowls and they are full of clean fuel.oh and also at full throttle when it's bogged down if I hit the choke it will almost die.I am starting to lean towards an electrical issue and not a fuel issue. Any help would be much appreciated!

Did you pump the bulb when it was struggling?

I had a Johnson do the same thing and it was a cracked fuel line between the tank hook up and carb. I figured that out after trying a dozen other things. It would idle fine, but would only run about quarter to third throttle.

X2 Same symptoms if the interior of the fuel line is seperating. It'll run ok until it starts sucking hard for fuel. I'd replace the lines and filter first.

might be the fuel pump. try pumping the bulb while its going flat out and see if it will run. thats an easy check for a leak also. with the engine shut off pump up the bulb and check your fuel lines

Did you stabilize the fuel before storing it for the winter, take a fuel sample in a clean/clear jar look for water beads in the gas or discolored color of the gas.

Yea I had a frind driving the boat and I squeezed the primer bulb while it was at full throttle and it was tight and didn't help the bog at all. Also squeezed it with cawLing off and looked for leaks and couldn't se any. Also what makes me think it might be a spark issue is that when at wide open throttle and it's bogging down when I hit the choke it gets worse. Like its not burning the fuel it's already getting and then when I choke it and give it a little more fuel it makes the bog worse. This boat is kept in a shop under a cover when not in use and would prolly be hard for a rat or mouse to get in it. And I haven't seen any signs of mice or rats in it.I don't know of any boats made with air filters that I'm aware of

Replace the lines, filter and rebuild the fuelpump first. Nothing in that old fuel system will agree with ethanol fuel. Run ethanol free fuel if u can find it. Does it happen to be a mercury force motor? They always had electrical issues.

I'd still replace the fuel lines. They have a liner that separates inside the lines. It doesn't leak but it collapses in there so it starves for fuel. The harder it tries to get fuel the tighter it squeezes down. You would never know it looking at the outside of the line.

When you change the lines make sure the new ones are ethanol grade that ethanol tears fuel lines up

Clean the carbs good could have a high speed jet plugged.
Than run some sea foam through it.

deteriorating fuel lines
clogged fuel filter
jet clogged in carburetor

I have an outboard about the same age that is in great shape and runs great. I replaced everything from the fuel tank to the carburetor and pulled, disassembled, and rebuilt the carbs when I first bought it.

Page 100 (page 101 in the pdf) in trouble-shooting-ignition.pdf

Trouble is you'll need a DVA meter for most of the tests but if you just want to know if it's fuel or ignition get a gap tester and set it to what ever the book recommends (usually around 3/8) if it runs good at idle and mid it's probably not a timing issue so a gap test should tell you a lot. What you have sounds like a classic fuel delivery problem but could be ignition as well. Should be easy to rule out before spending money on parts.

Is that the 2+2 design? I have a 2001 90 mercury , had similar problem. Was the high end carb, jet plugged. Had them cleaned and problem was solved

If you can, pull the carbs off and check the reeds also. Just be careful with the linkage. Some have a bunch of crap on there that needs to be set right. But yours should be easier than the ones with 6 carbs.
