So never really tried weaving too much but our track torch is down so can't cut test plates or practice plates right now so trying to be somewhat productive. As far as weaving with 7018 vertical uphill ( round 80amps 1/8" rod )how does this look ? Was always told it should look like carp scales when you weave but not sure if mine are too big or too small, my restart seems a little sloppy too but wanted to see what yall think .

Getting past the 'startup glob', it's darn near perfect. From the 'restart', the center (wider) section looks pretty good but then it peters out some.

If it all looked like the lower section, I'd say you got it down. cool

Looks great! If you lived near me I would give you some small projects I need welding up. I can weld but don't have a welder.

Looks a bit cold , but nice for never doing one regular !!

You could up the amps a bit maybe 5 to ten depending on your thickness of metal, then you might have to move your speed a bit quicker, but the bead will lay flatter.

Your also in the corner of angle which takes your heat away making it colder to lay up on.

If you brace your moving arm while moving you will have a consistent width easier, to also practice width you can draw two lines down the sides to give you an idea when to turn back

You should start on one weave down instead of right at the ending though, just keep at it, looks good !

IMHO When you move up go straight across when that fills in go across and up and are you laying a bead first and than a weave if not weld metal goes to the heat which is the sides in a v cut leaving no penetration in the middle Weave the width of 2 rods is the old school of thumbs Looks good takes a lot of welding every day to get bead uniformity

Your still a bit cold, and your right side is held a bit to long before moving left , notice it humps higher than the left !

Don't try to make your weave so noticeable, it will leave its wave fine, when you have the speed, temp, and motion fine,

Practice with all of them, your also allowed ten degrees tilt in a test , which most will take at least five laid back, try that as well you will see a marked difference in the lay !!

You aren't getting any penetration at the welds edges. To much build up In the middle Spend more time at the edges and puddle the edges.

Great thread. I do not know a darn thing about welding but would really like to learn.
What is so awesome about this post is the fact that experienced welders give outstanding positive constructive criticism, and pointers on how to improve.
So often these days one finds negative feedback the flavor of the day. The guys posting here are guys trying to help a fellow man. Love it. Many in this world could learn a lot from this post about how to treat others.

Got some good guys helping you out Wolfy.

Mac
