That is why I take a castor bath and drink some of Nessy's castor bourbon before I head out! I also say,"Be the Beaver", the whole time I am out there. I also fall in and smack my face on the water so they think I am one of the boys being loud and doing a lot of smacking! grin

I really don't know, but if they can tell by castor and other gland scents and lures that another beaver is around I would think they could learn human scent presents danger if they have smelled that next to a buddy with a square trap on his head.

Human scent doesn't bother them unless they're given a reason to associate the smell with danger. Nuisance trappers need to use sets that are bedded and blended well....one toe pinch or conibear slap and you've just done it for that beaver. Use blind sets with stabilized footholds and conibears completely submerged from day 1.

Fur trappers need not worry too much about this as if they get spooky just move on.

Make good sets and set heavy, and leave the traps time to do their work.Get in and out in an efficient manner and dont create unneccesary disturbance-keep it to a minimum.Scout the area, pick out all your set locations then move in and make all your sets efficiently.Mix up your sets some blind, some lured etc.6 or 8 good sets leave for a couple or 3 days and most times you will have them all.Save your dam breaks and den entrance sets for clean up if necessary.Always make sure your beavers are submerged after being caught.
The more often you visit your sets, like any other trapping its counterproductive.

Good response! Those beavers have a better nose than they're given credit for. As you stated, they're not shy of human scent until they find out they have reason to be.

They smell everything. I've seen them sniff all over dryland snares

I think the worst thing is tromping around the lodges.

Great minds think alike.......Yup,before I go beavering....the night before I have 2 drams of Eau de Musc...and when Iam done making the set....I put a little of my own scent around the area....if you get my drift. Works like a charm ! [Linked Image]

I have seen Beavs stick their head high out of the water sniffing when they get down wind of me, right before the tail slap!

I have also had good luck splashing water on my body grips in runs, then throwing dry sand/dirt on the wet trap. Not sure if its a blend deal or smell removal deal but definitely helps pick up old wary Beaver.

I find it prudent to not have too much before beavering though.

I dunno yet.......but I'm learning a little.

Maybe I need some beaver flavored whiskey...probably not though.

I fall in enough as it is....

Keep your boots dry and your powder too.

I remember when a fur check was reality.....now I'm just trapping for the love of it.

Best Regards,

JT

I think the water in the run making the ground wet adds to the eye appeal of the set as well.
