I just wish we'd get ice I can use or it would all melt away....2 inches of water rind is nothing but a pain in my butt.....
I can see where I need to put my sets in but I can't get there from here...
I was going to buy a spud and an ice auger, but for what??? We haven't any ice worth a crap in several years now.
Cow farts, automobiles, and Algore taking away my winter fun.... (Note there's a way darker story on that topic but I'm not going into it here)
Keep your boots dry and your powder too.
I remember when a fur check was reality.....now I'm just trapping for the love of it.
Best Regards,
JT

Thanks, guys. I posted the pics from my phone as soon as I got back to my truck and I hate trying to type on that stinking little keypad. My first foray into beaver snaring and I got one. Caught it just behind the shoulders. It's about a mile hike in there and I was so pessimistic I almost didn't take my pack. I'm glad I did.
I didn't weigh it but I think it's only about twenty-five or thirty pounds. I was hoping for something a bit bigger and darker but I'll keep after it.
Thanks for all the help and encouragement from each and every one of you. Most appreciated.

Excellent! I'm working on catching them with conibears and footholds right now, but snaring is next.
Keep your boots dry and your powder too.

I've got one for you. I went in to check my sets today and immediately saw one of them had been disturbed. I thought the disturbance came from under the ice but as I got closer I saw the PVC pole I had my snares and bait supported from laying on top of the ice. It took me a minute to recollect how I had left the set constructed.
One of the poles I used to keep the set from getting pulled under was the only thing projecting from the hole. I went to the PVC pipe that was laying four or five yards from the set to look it over. One snare was almost completely closed and the other was either chewed or ripped off close to where it would have been secured around a beavers foot or leg. There was no blood or fur anywhere to be seen.
As I was snowshoeing in I thought I could make out the track of a small bear but the snow was crusted over enough it was hard to tell for certain. It's not uncommon to see bear out and about this time of year during a thaw and I didn't think much of it until I got to my sets.
Have you guys ever had a beaver come topside from under the ice (two feet thick) and chew a snare off their foot or had a bear yank your set?
I had a camera facing the lodge but moved it inside the wood line where I got the fisher pic above. I remade the set and pointed the camera back toward the lodge.

I've had them get caught early and come out before the hole froze. Then they would mess around on the ice and....the hole would freeze so they couldn't get back under. I have seen where foxes circled a beaver like that but never made a serious attempt to kill it. The beaver were always there and no attempt to chew . Still wearing the snare. Neat, I've never witnessed that. Would have been some cool pictures had the camera been aimed that way. I don't know what the odds of it happening again are but the camera is pointed that way. Probably safe to assume I caught my second beaver in a snare. I'm liking it.
