There is a belief and a discussion that boars can identify their own offspring by scent ...and will not kill those

Here's a bit more info on bear predation on moose/caribou.

Our own GULO is cited in the references. Hopefully he will weigh in on this subject

Bernie, I have been guiding bait sitters for years. Run lots of baits and cameras. I agree with you that boars killing cubs is a myth. I have many blocks I hunt that sows & cubs co-exist with some very large boars. I do believe though that yearling bears are vulnerable at baits to large bear. That is a competition thing though.Competing for the same food source. I also believe that most predation of cubs occurs in the den by wolves in this area. Year before last I never saw a cub on a bait. Although I had wet sows on baits. Last year had lots of cubs around again. One sow even had 4. Which I found unusual. Many with 2 or 3. some with 1.

Seems Minnesota moose biologists should read the study posted by White.

Overview of Relationships Between Bears, Wolves, and Moose in Alaska

Biologists refer to this situation as the Low Density Dynamic Equilibrium or LDDE because moose density fluctuates yet remains low.

Help yourself.

First, I have no experience with a black bear boar killing cubs. I have seen many yearlings chased off by adult boars when a female came in heat. Not saying it doesn't happen, just not very common, at least in Oregon where my experience is. What I did experience twice was a sow in heat captured with a foot snare that was killed by another bear. An adult boar most likely. I have talked to a number of other ADC men who have experienced the same thing. It never made sense to me. No doubt the snare ruined the honeymoon, but the result seems extreme.

Black bears are very efficient at finding new born fawns. I had the unpleasant opportunity to see it happen.

Yup,

That is the conventional wisdom put forth
by Alaska Game Biologists, USFWS, and
National Park Service.

Brown bear & Grizzly that is.

Don't know about Black bear though.
