Found this old axe head with no handle well rusted and the edge looks like it was sharpened many times. [Linked Image]

There is a chance it is marked, but the rust prevents you from seeing it. Put a piece of paper against it and make a rubbing with the side of a pencil and then do the other side. If there is any writing on it, it should transfer to the paper for you to read.

can't help with the year unless you can find a makers mark

looks like a Jersey pattern.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

That is Newt's axe. Must'a bounced out of his truck two days ago.. The salt air down there in Piney Land makes things age before their time, hense it is all rusted. Chiggars ate the handle plum off cause they smelt human sweat on it and thought it was somebody's leg.
On a serious note I would guess it is from the 1960's, used on a logging operation for pulpwood limbing. Commercial made, not hand forged. Still a neat find. Eric

Give it the old "vinegar soak". If there is anything left, it might reveal a date.

Believe it or not, I pulled one up on a trot line in 60 foot of water. Was in an area where “log booms” were pretty frequently used back in the day. I’ve tried to restore it is all rusted and pitted. Couldn’t ever find a date or a manufacturer on it.

Best guess right there. I'd bet a coffee that it never had a maker mark.

Years ago after removing some nuisance beaver for the highway,I was back in the bush lowering the water and pulled an old HBC axe head out of the black muck.It had the old HBC mark on it with the H and the B attached together.
I put a handle on it and used it for a few years then lost it again on my trapline somewhere. It was nicer than new axes,it had a thin blade and stayed sharp.

Do you think being buried in the muck kept it from rusting as bad as it would have if lyimg on the ground?

Thanks Eric, yeah you would think Newt used it chopping clams out of the bottom of the bay as rusted as it is. I cleaned it up in the sink last night, the walls where the handle went through are pretty thin from rusting so makers mark is not something I'll be finding, thanks for the replays thought it was neat.

Agree! A good soaking in vinegar, aided by brushing, will clean it up.

your better off to use Evap-o-rust instead of vinegar. it works quicker and does a better job from my experience.
