John Deere is in the process of laying off workers. 460 since late last year. 3/4 of them are in Iowa. Not sure what is going on. I got my info from a Reuters report. Hopefully these people can find good jobs.

As technology grows the less need for actual workers. I see it in every job, even technical ones.
I’m in communications, copper was money during storms, but fiber now makes us the Maytag repairman. I’ve forgotten where places even are now. Once we place fiber and associated equipment it just doesn’t go bad. I’m sure there’s a shelf life on some of it...still waiting for it to fall apart.

You don't suppose it has anything to do with low grain prices do you? LOL.

I used to work at their Harvester plant in East Moline (combines) Half of that number I believe is from their Dubuque Iowa plant. Grain prices will have affect eventually although Dubuque makes construction equipment I believe. None of these are due to automation I think, just lack of people buying.

four to 5 years of low profits has put a damper on farm equipment sales for sure. The biggest part of their growth lately has been in lawnmowers, small hobby equipment and industrial equipment. Hard to buy 600K choppers when milk is below the cost of production or 500K combines to combine crops that can't pay for the equipment. Automation in agriculture saves on labor, increases efficiency but equipment costs run very high as does repair and upkeep.

It's nothing new. Deere has always hired a bunch of people when they ramp up production for one reason or another, and then lays them off when no longer needed.

I work at the Davenport plant. They ramped up production a couple years ago when ordes were rolling in. Sales have since slowed down so now need to readjust the workforce.

Thanks. The 6068’s are popular here but I didn’t like the idea of the computer control. Couple friends have had issues. But some others love them.

DRF,
Not sure about construction equipment in Dubuque, but I believe some of it is timber harvesting equipment.
