So I am interested in purchasing a frozen Fisher and marten in order for me to put up and tan. I have tanned a bunch off S. Indiana animals for wall hangers and would like to begin adding some animals that I will probably never trap. My question is, is it legal for them to be shipped frozen whole to someone in a state that doesn't have a season? And I dont have a fur buyers license. Probably not interested in doing it now, more likely next winter but wanted to know if anyone could help me with the legal issues.

Does your state have a Taxi licence, that should cover the situation.

Get a tanned one it might be easier all kinds of rules out there like said taxi license, fur buyers license, can it be owned even by the game dept. rules. If I give a badger to a person in WI they need a paper filled out to keep it. Gave one to young man a few years ago the CO called me and we talked for a while so he could issue the permit. What is a big deal there is just a varmint here 2 different classifications of the same critter.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

Since neither species are CITIES species,
and if they were legally taken or possessed
by the seller, there should be no issue.

New York State has a tagging/sealing requirement
for Marten & Fisherin order to legally sell,
leave with a taxidermist, or ship out of state.

As long as all the rules are followed,
there should be no issues.

To be Safe, I'd get a bill of sale that included
a statement from the trapper/seller that
all game laws were followed and that the
specimen was legally taken and possessed.

That should cover any liability you might have.

You will have to pay the $15 for a fur buyer license I believe. Taxi license is same price, and I'm sure it would work too.

A lot of States require a license of some type if you are engaged in a commercial activity, but exclude personal use transactions.
You do want to check though with both the State you are exporting the animals from, and the State you are bringing them into. You do not want to get into a federal "Lacey Act" violation.

You need a fur buyers or taxidermy license. And a fur buyers license isn't $15.00, it's $75.00.

If your buying animals legally take, there will be no problem buying them. The only thing you can't buy is Waterfowl.

Fisher and marten are not defined as "furbearers" in Indiana and thus do not appear to be subject to the furbearer license. US Fish & Wildlife can get involved if wildlife is bought/sold illegally across state lines, so good advice above about getting documentation when buying. Always best to call your DNR to get the official answer. Good luck.

Indiana Fur Buyer's License Rule & Statute

IC 14-8-2-108 "Furbearing mammal" Sec. 108. "Furbearing mammal", for purposes of IC 14-22, means beaver, red fox, gray fox, long tailed weasel, mink, muskrat, raccoon, coyote, opossum, or skunk.

IC 14-22-19 Chapter 19. Licenses for Furbearing Mammals

IC 14-22-19-1 License requirement Sec. 1. A person must have a license issued by the department to engage in the business of buying furbearing mammals or the untanned hides or furs of furbearing mammals in Indiana.

Federalism works great in some ways and is a drag in others. All the guy wants to do is add to his personal collection of critters that were legally taken somewhere else but has to go through x many jumps of the hoop to get it done. Good luck in your goal but if you talk to your state game people, get their response in writing so you have some hard copy to fall back on if things hiccup. Minions can talk smack and/or ignorance on how they "interpret" the laws. If they have to write something down, less chance of smack or ignorance or ta least it can be shown in court. Then again, they may refuse and show how much of a public servant they are. Enjoy your north woods tree climber skins when you get them!!

If you buy them already tanned, you can probably avoid all the red tape.
