You have two choices, depending on the amount.Either wriite it off or make him fear for his well being.(no witnesses obviously). You can either hurt him physically or burn his house or car etc.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

I would send a text or email asking if he had the xxx amount of money he owes, that way you start a paper trail and prove he agrees he owes you the money. Maybe even ask about starting a payment plan for the xxx amount he owes, just get him to awknowledge the debt so if you have to go to court you have proof.

Another aspect of public shaming is that you’ll probably discover he owes money to a lot of other people too. That seems to be the way it goes every time I see it on the local FB pages. Someone posts “Joe Blow is a dirtbag, owes me money and hasn’t paid me a cent” and it turns into a mini “me too” movement. grin They owe half the town money. Then what are you gonna do? Get in line? File a class action to split what he owns between everyone?
I say it’s better to deal with it personally and directly. I’ve never seen a personal debt fixed by adding more people to the mix. The attorney route is fine if you have something in writing. If not, I’m not sure any attorney would bother. It’s hard to prove a verbal contract.

Don't give anything to anyone that you have to have back! Unless there is a contract and you put in the due diligence to insure they have adequate collateral!

The ce-ment booties has crossed my mind. I'm likely going to have to get used to the idea I'm never going to see my money but I hate the idea of letting the guy go with impunity.

Neither a borrower nor a lender be, for loan oft loses both itself and friend, and borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.

I personally don't think you have leg to stand on without anything being in writing. Almost like it's a he said, she said kinda of thing.

As for sending a certified letter, he doesn't have to sign for it. At least that's what happened to me a number of years ago. Back then, the p.o. tried to deliver it 3 times and it was sent back to me if I remember correctly. Mine was only for $320 but with my small business, every little bit helps or hurts, in that case.

I hope things work out for you.

Grandpa always said, treat every loan you give as a gift, then be surprised when it’s paid back.

He also said don’t lend money unless your willing to lose it.

Oh, and if that doesn’t work...

Could always help him turn his ankle...

May those who love us, love us.

And those that don't love us,

May God turn their hearts.

And if He doesn't turn their hearts,

May he turn their ankles,

So we'll know them by their limping.

I see he posted a pic of himself with a big new tattoo, so he had some money, just chose an irresponsible way to use it. Thanks for all of the input, guys.

Learn from it, write it off on you taxes and pass the word that he is a bad liability. If it was on paper you can write it off, if not it should have been I even put loan with family members on paper.

You could present it on FB just like you did here.
Ask..."Hey what would you folks do in this situation". Give 'em the details but no names. He'll know you're talking about him. He'll also know you are serious and could.....if you choose to....name names.

That's good advice, white. I think that's how I'll proceed.

Just send him a text or FB message in private first, and get him to acknowledge he still owes you x number of dollars and you'll have it in writing. Just send something simple, "Hey I was wondering if maybe you were getting a big tax refund or something, if you could pay me a little money on what you owe me, it doesn't have to be the whole (type the amount here) amount, but you do remember you still owe me that, right?"
