Anyone had a transmission replaced lately? Not broke yet, but has 100k on her and it's pulled a camper much of it. I have a gut feeling it may be getting weak.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. If it's not acting up I'd maybe do a fluid and filter change at 100k but that's it.

I had an 03 Silverado 1500 that needed a transmission replaced, if I remember right I was quoted almost $7,000 from the dealer for a rebuilt transmission and labor to do the replacement.

I found a guy locally theough a friend who fixed it for around 1/3 of that.

I've ran 5 silverados/suburbans over 200,000 miles each and pulled a camper about 2,000 - 3,000 miles each year (1988-present). Only ever had one tranny problem. My 2005 decided not to go one day. After coasting to a stop it fixed it's self. I was on the way to the dealer to pickup a new one when it happened. I did have the trannies serviced at the recommended intervals.

Be careful , sometimes doing a fluid change on an older automatic transmission can make it worse. It can even make it fail completely.
There is a LOT of discussion on this topic , just beware.
Changing all the other type fluids in a vehicle is usually a good thing for each system. But it can in some cases it can make it worse for an automatic. Sounds strange that replacing fluid would do harm , but in some cases it is true.

Just sayin.......

I've heard the same thing about changing fluid potentially causing damage, but don't know enough about it personally to comment either way.

I think you can put the flame suit back on the hook, unless it's a more "hotly" debated item than I thought.

I've heard that from flushing a tranny, crap, I mean a transmission blush but not from just draining and replacing the filter. So put the flame suit back on. grin

This is a very hotly debated topic , changing fluid on automatic transmissions , especially if it has never been changed. Even serious car guys get into arguments about it all the time.

But here is Scotty Kilmer's take on it -

One point for everyone reading this thread , and there is no debate on this , if you do any decent amount of towing or snow plowing with your truck and it has an automatic transmission , get a transmission cooler. Some trucks may have a small one or even a larger one bought as part of an option package.

They are affordable and easy to install for the DIYer. You can get them in most larger well stocked parts houses or buy one online. Sorta universal fit for most applications. It mounts in front of the radiator and you attach your transmission lines into it. Fairly easy job. Does wonders for harder working transmissions. Doesn't fix a problem , just prevents it from happening.

A flush isn't the same as a change. Don't flush if it's older, but do change.

Gary , back somewhat to your original question. Cost ? I don't know what year , engine and if you have 4wd. So it is hard to figure an answer. Also where you are located is a big factor in cost as well. Different markets , different prices.

This is what you can do. Don't go to the stealership. That is usually the most expensive option. Go to a transmission shop , they do this stuff every day. You will probably get a better price and better service there.

Talk to the owner there with your concerns. They will be a better judge of how the transmission is operating than most. Don't just let them talk you into doing the job , just because they want to do it. You can also get a second opinion from another transmission shop. Used to be going to a big chain like AAMCO was a good choice because they stand behind their work with a warranty , however if you know a reputable local mom&pop that can be good too , I don't know your area.

Ask the transmission shop what their opinion is on changing the fluid. If they feel it is safe , ask them to do the work changing it. Don't say anything but if it gets changed and something goes wrong , they are the ones who told you to change it and did the work , some of the responsiblity falls on them to make things right.

Edit - I missed the fact you said it was K 1500 = 4wd

Look for a wreck with the same trans at a tow shop you can often buy a wrecked one cheaper then just the trans alone if you can swap it out yourself.

Had to replace the transmission in my 2003 Chevy Silverado about three or four years ago. Bought the truck new and with the price of new trucks these days I just keep the old girl on the road.
The transmission job was about $1500.00.
The guy did a great job. I use the truck as my trapping rig, plowing snow, hauling lumber and fire wood etc.
She does not look wicked pretty but gets the job done. (It is an automatic and has four wheel drive)

Was that a replacement or a repair? If it was replaced, that's a heck of a deal! I didnt think you could even get a transmission for that much, but I haven't really shopped for them either, so I could be off.

I did change fluid and filter at 75000 even though it looked fine. Just felt like the right thing to do. Same with spark plugs. Just doesn't seem right driving a vehicle 100000 miles without maintenance other than oil and filter.
Thanks for the replies.
