See a temp position job for mow road ditches for county, with tracter an flail mower. Give me ideas, oftentimes watch dot an parnoid them in November as where going hit, pulled 220s before them came an also lost few to flail mower, this is 1 county away but my county is bigger, go ask state employment office how to apply with county. State dot is probly impossible to get, up to $18 hr, layoff winter. Have mow golf course years back an work farm, thought about a trailer an big rider before. But no idea if enough bussiness. Town is hire someone for $10 hr, how many cut grass in off season an make enough $$? Beats factory job I have presently if can get job do that

I have get loan if did, an trailer, if could pull it, not good credit, can get smaller loans. But $1000s,, doubtful, I live small town, no idea. How easy get bussiness going or if much bussiness, city 20 Miles away with lot competitors, But now that I think it, there at least 2 lawn mow bussiness. I know of that are private small contracters. With other bussiness around they advertise all over, letters in po box

Coonman, you would be surprised how much business can be had in small towns. I have mowed over 600 lawns each of the last 2 years. 90 percent of these lawns are in a town of 700 people. Be prepared to put in some long hours, 8am to 10 pm is the norm. Then you have to change blades, sharpen blades, and do maintenance on your machines. Kids aren't much of a threat, they aren't going to work that hard. When I was growing up that's what kids did for money. Now mom and dad just give it to them. There is really good money in lawn service if you want to work at it. Been in this business for 17 years and do it myself. Oh, I will be 60 in May.

I can't get the neighbor kids to mow my grass for $40, and it only takes about 45 minutes.

Dave, cutting grass may be a very good career choice for you. I suggest starting with the minimum amount of equipment needed and buying more and upgrading to better, faster equipment as you can.

If you are unsure, maybe apply at those bigger operations . I'm sure they are looking for employees. That way you could find out if you like it or not.

I talked my son into doing it through college, he made way, way more than he could have with a summer job. He slowly bought equipment. When he graduated and got his main job he sold his accounts and some equipment for $15,000. I did a lot of his maintenance in the evening for the usual dad discount. He actually pondered doing as a business full time. Plenty of work if you’re a worker.

I mowed several yards for 8.00 each back in the late 70’s and picked blackberries for 4.00 a gallon. Ed Bauer Fur Company got about all of it.

Virginia Department of Transportation runs John Deere tractors and they're known to have a decent benefit package for their employees. They are also safety conscious.

You got that right Run! All the medians and roadsides are full of tall weeds that will block your view when trying to pull out into traffic. I have always loved Virginia, but its starting to go to crap. Especially after 'ol Govn. Blackface got in.

I live in Indiana and I notice they don't mow like they use to. But I do know that a friend of mine knows a guy that contracts out to state to mow , had to hire Mexicans to mow because he couldn't get any white guys to work.

Heck thats on the cheap side. When I was doing yards my rate was $60/hr. Never disclose your rate to customers just tell them what the final price is. I would work a few afternoons a week until the truck was paid for.

Coonman, start out small. Work your regular job, then cut grass in the evenings and weekends.
Slowly build up your customer base until you feel comfortable enough trying to do it full time.

I know that I am "Old Codger", but I am sitting here laughing and blowing water out my nose. In the late 1940 and 1950s, I was mowing probably the same size yards you fellows are with an old reel type lawn mower for 25 to 50 cents. If it was almost 2 acres like the one yard I cut, I got $1.50. The first years I hoofed it pushing mower ahead of me and the last 3 years I road my bike, pulling mowing behind the bike. A couple of the walking jobs, took longer to get and back than it did to do the mowing. Mowing in summer and shoveling snow in the winter. I was planning on starting that the year I turned 4, (close by yards), but was laid up most of the summer in a body cast with 3 broken Vertebrae's and cracked pelvis. So, I started when I was 5 and added trapping to fray when I was 6 in 1947.

Times certainly have changed...
