Anyone work as a Pipeliners? I'm from wv. 40 years old with 15 years in education and 20 years in the service industry as a whitewater and fishing guide. I need something different for myself and my family.
How do I get into pipelining? For those that do, how often are you laid off? How often do you have a job close enough to home to spend evenings with your family? What's the upward mobility of the job?
I can answer some of your questions pertaining to mainline pipeline Forget about any modicum of a normal family life. Ten hour days six days a week are the norm and a minimum at best. If you are on the payroll forget about vacations, birthday parties, family functions etc.
The money and benefits will be.good. There is alot of work going on in that northern WV, OH,PA area lately.
There is room for upward mobility if you can work, are smart and can hack the lifestyle.
If you want to get into it the best way is to know someone. Cronyism is alive and well in the pipeline industry. If you do not know anyone call the local labrers or teamsters union hall in the area you want to work and see hat it takes to get on the list.
If they won't send you out or your looking at a non union spread go right to the job yard of a particular project and talk to the union stewad or whomever may be in charge of hiring. Turnover rates by newbies is fairly high. Most can't hack the lifestyle.
If you want a more normal lifestyle, apply at the companies who own/operate those lines. They are generally well compensated jobs and usually come with paid holidays and paid vacation.
