Good film, however, the narrator leads the viewer to believe the reason the nutria is out of control is because people stopped buying fur in the 1880s.

Compare a nutria pelt to a beaver pelt and you'll discover a different reason.

Six bucks, that is less work than trapping muskrats. I would think, no grading the fur etc.

Compare a nutria pelt to a beaver pelt and you'll discover a different reason.

I trap both and if you were to look at a rack of dyed sheared nutria and another of dyed sheared beaver the main difference is that the beaver is a heavier piece of material because it has double the leather weight.

Nutria belly fur is deluxe stuff. I think the main reason that nutria fur isn't a thing anymore is that not enough quality nutria can hit the market to get the fur industry interested. Louisiana nutria are not shearable quality like Oregon's.

Also, i'm sure you meant 1980's.

How do colony traps work on the coypu?

WHEN Minnesota allows out of state trappers a chance at trapping our resource, I might take the opportunity to go south and trap/hunt nutria. As a trapper first and a lousy shot (except for 20 gauge ) I’d be better off trapping them.

Boco, nutrias weigh about 12-18 lbs on avg so I would say no on the colony traps.

Sure looks like fun shotgunning them from the boat.

There is a limit of 5 per day if you aren’t a land owner ... even when we try to get rid of an invasive species Louisiana politics have to get in the way and they have to get there hand outs from the big time land owners.

I know a few good beaver trappers using colony traps in them in the right locations, with great success

A nutria would sooner crawl over a submerged colony trap rather than swim through it.
Though they are aquatic rodents, they do not behave like muskrats.
I ran into this type of behavior on a seemingly endless ridge along a tidal river. I was trapping racoon on the ridge, but my 220s were all too often clogged with nutria.
I used to catch a lot of muskrats in the marshes on this same river until the nutria took it over, They would overtake the muskrat bank dens by burrowing the underwater entrances until they were just open holes in the bank.
It seems that they prefer to spend most of their time above the waterline rather than submerged for any length of time.
I can only surmise that where they come from in South America, they just use the water to escape land predators, and there isn't a need to be as evasive as muskrats.
Just dive in the water and they are safe from jaguars and such.

what is the best time of year ?
I could really use a vacation where I road around in a boat blasting nutria.

the city was complaining about all the bank rats here burrowing into the levy I said with the number I see canoeing the canal post some signs and give me a few mornings of working up and down the canal in my canoe with a shotgun.

yeah they didn't like that idea .

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

There are many states in the south that we can trap. Many don't hold our lunatic system against us. Just have to watch for gators and snakes on the warm days is all.
