Hiker Finds Body

Update: Officials say body found in the woods in District Township likely local resident.

Officials believe a body found by a hiker in District Township is a local resident who was last heard from in December.

The hiker discovered the mummified body in the woods Tuesday night, the Berks County coroner’s office said.

The remains were taken to the Reading Hospital morgue for an autopsy scheduled to be performed Thursday morning by Dr. Neal A. Hoffman, a forensic pathologist, Chief Deputy Coroner Jonn M. Hollenbach said Wednesday.

The remains were found shortly before 7 p.m. in the extremely remote area in the first block of Long Lane. The hiker called 9-1-1.

State police responded and called for the coroner. Deputy Coroner Melissa Spuhler pronounced the person dead at 7:47 p.m.

Hollenbach said the body is believed to be that of a man who lived in the nearby area. The last known contact with that person was in December.

State police added Wednesday morning that the individual was known to live in the woods.

The death was not believed to be suspicious, Hollenbach said.

It will be a relief for someone!

I think I know who it is. A guy my wife went to school with name of Vinny Walk went full hermit thirty years ago or more. He had an old Kawasaki he rode around on. Sometimes you's see him riding along with a couple of fish flopping on his back. He was no doubt heading for his camp to have supper.

Next time hide the body better.

Hey, Lug, my wife went to school with Vinny, if you're talking about the 58 year old Vinny that went to Brandywine. We haven't seen him for a month or so. He lives with his father in Topton and now we need to check on him. He still rides a motor cycle and does odd jobs for my in-laws. Ask your wife if she knew any Hamiltons from Schweitz Road.

Yeah, that’s the Vinny I’m talking about. My wife and I were just discussing the Walk brothers and their dad Jim. She grew up with them near Mertztown. She was saying that Vinny didn’t live at home and she didn’t know if it was his choice or if it was because his dad wouldn’t let him. She used to work with the dad at Deka many moons ago.

We both know the Hamiltons if it’s the same ones I’m thinking of. They had a son Brad and the outfit I worked for about 30 years ago built a house for them back towards Sterner’s garage.

It turns out it wasn't Vinny. According to the coroner it was 48-year-old Glen Miller who apparently also lived in the woods. No other details are available yet.

So has anybody found Vinny?

My wife was wondering just how many people are living in the woods around here. I told her it was the high property taxes. All some folks can afford was a tarp and a campfire.

Wife & mother in law don't want to call him. They sell arrow heads for him at Renninger's and I think he was there a month or so ago to pickup some money. He sold two for $100 each. They call him at his dad's house when they want to see him.In the warm months his does chores for us.
