440 grains at 1500-1600 fps. This is a pre cursor to the 500 nitro express. I believe my rifle was made in the early 1890’s.

I've always wanted to own a vintage British double rifle but have never had that kind of disposable cash. I just saw .700 Nitro Express rounds going for $49 each.

That 700 is an absolute monster. There’s only a handful of them in the world.
I scour the gun auctions, the Army/Navy had a firing pin issue in one of the barrels. Went way cheap, had it fixed for $130. Wouldn't they be considered a destructive device since they are over .50 cal and be NFA regulated? Or would the age make that a moot point. Sounds like hunting with a brass cartridge muzzleloader. I would definitely be reloading and casting my own bullets. What an awsum rifle.

Just one of those thing you must have at one point in your life! I'm truly jealous. If you head shoot squirrels you should be ok. I shot one in the neck with a .50 round ball( was aiming at the head it moved I think). I was 16 or so and it was all I had to hunt with at the time. Its head looked like a pez dispenser but meat was unharmed. In your case that would be the most expensive squirrel meat ever.

The 700 is a fairly recent invention. The 600 was the biggest and commercially produced starting circa early 1900’s. Well some rich guy wanted to have THE biggest and pay a mansions worth of money for the first and only 700. I’m thinking in the late 1980’s, not sure bout that. There are more out there now. There seem to be an exemption of some kind for big bore hunting rifles. Holland & Holland came out with it a few years back. They initially sold for around two hundred grand if my memory serves. Rounds were a hundred bucks a pop. I like vintage guns and would settle for a .470.
