We as Trappers should have known the chances of a debilitating virus were high. When animal populations get too high communicable diseases spread rapidly due to more frequent contact. Starvation, etc knocks the population back down. These diseases spread much easier through species interaction, due mostly because of high populations. Social distancing is trying to mitigate this.

Why are we as a planet trying so hard to fight the symptoms of overpopulation, (global warming, starvation, easily spreadable viruses) instead of the cause? It's like a band-aid on an arterial bleed. Instead we think technological advancements, more efficient farming, and carbon taxes will save us.

Why are governments not proactive about this? There will be a time when the earth hits it's limit. Maybe not our lifetime, but our kids? And the population will be reduced through nature's savagery. A savagery we are getting a tiny glimpse of with this virus.

Why do you think it's seldom talked about? Is it perhaps because unlike global warming there is no money to be made off it, and we really are that selfish as people?

more than once I have posted that U.S. income tax is backwards. Should be less tax for not having children. Not less tax for having more. Since welfare isnt going away it should be the same.

Right?? I know China has the one child thing and we all know how that worked out...but they at least they identified a problem and tried something.

As horrible as it may be, war has reduced the human population. WW2 resulted in something like 8 million world wide. Had that not happened, one can't help but wonder what the worlds population would be like today. Knowing how our country works and thinks, I can't ever believe we will have a limit on the number of children in a family. Even Mother Theresa said children are like flowers, how can you have enough flowers?

Well, true. All that is true. I don't believe we will either. And world war two simply bought time.

It's a very brutal topic, but eventually will be a very necessary one I think.

Why on Earth would you want to make it harder for a family to pay their bills and feed their kids?

We as stewards of the land understand population control but many people who live in the metro areas don't. With the high population in a small area and the belief that more is better, it becomes just a matter of time before the powers greater than us does something about it. I would rather have quality over quantity but that doesn't seem to be a popular belief these days.

As selfish as it sounds, I like having wild places. I feel like there is more to being alive than eating, breathing, sleeping and staying warm.

An objective thinker might say that the world is not even close to carrying capacity of humans. Look at all the land that isn't either city or farmland. See? Lots of room for condos to stack people like cordwood, and lots of room for intensive farming. We need trees for oxygen you say? Well...I am sure science will figure that out as well so we can wring every last bit of life out of the space we have

In a way too many humans are the same as too many coons in a given area. Distemper wipes the coons out. Crime, starvation, viruses, and wars eliminate some of the excess humans. It is cruel but a fact of life.

I agree but thought your WW2 numbers were off and by my research it was more like 70 to 80 million people world wide, all different type of causalities, you have to remember there were 6 million Jews alone that were killed and I’m counting those.

Life would be better if Trappers ran the world. Lol.

All I am saying is, maybe your post is obvious to us, but why isn't it obvious to more people?

We as humans think we are so smart, yet here we are ignoring the real cause of most of our issues.

At the risk of sounding like a commie (I am not) I think the issue lies with the fact that for capitalism to work a country needs to maintain some level of growth.

I don't think it's our business to decide how many people should inhabit the Earth. my Farfetch'd shot in the dark guesses someday there's going to be a virus that's going to knock out something crazy, like 75% of the world's population.. Who knows but god

It’s the same for all economic types an example is here in the U.S. we have a reverse pyramid, the older Americans out number the younger ones so the younger ones have to do more to support the older ones.

It might not be our business, but knowing with decent certainty that a virus is likely to kill millions, and that overpopulation will be a huge contributing factor...can we sit back and do nothing?

Keep in mind the story of the people who drowned in a flood. They asked why God didn't save them and he told them "I sent two boats and a helicopter, you told them you were fine and that God would save you".

I've often thought the world is getting ripe for another virus, disease, plague. With all the people traveling, lots of high density population areas and the Wests lack of commitment to preserve its own culture it seems like its only a matter of time.

There is room for making the world more habitable. Humans have degraded the land to almost uninhabitable in large areas. These areas are becoming deserts. Over grazing and poor agricultural practices is the main reason.
Good news is its easier to repair these areas than one would think.

Another issue is alot of the population growth is in areas that least can sustain it, Africa for one. Growth in the underdeveloped nations/areas less growth in the developed areas.

While there is more space available with some work I think it would be a wise thing to work towards limiting population growth.
