Anyone ever home tan squirrel pelts? I picked up a black squirrel today & was thinking it might make a nice tan.
Also, I'm thinking a red squirrel would make a nice tan.

I did one once using just neatsfoot oil. Except for breaking the tail while skinning, it turned out beautifully soft.

I just scraped it real clean, then put some oil on it and started breaking it over a cable, like braintanning without the brains.

A little oil and a little elbow grease and it came out very soft and almost pure white.

Mine was a black squirrel.

I tan lots of red squirrels(tamiascurius hudsonicus). Not sure what species you are referring to,there is a red version of the fox squirrel which unlike the red squirrel is not a furbearer.
The red squirrel is easy to tan and when prime is a nice fur with good leather.

For how the pic of the furs Boco you did a great job on them, I know it takes alot of work to get them that way I do some home tan myself and mainly use the alum and salt way and then use the neasfoot oil to soft them up with the work put into them.

What's the best way to preserve squirrel tails? I have a bunch I was going to sell to Groeny tonight, but he suspended all his routes. I had them frozen, but don't plan to run a freezer all summer.
