I am going to attempt tanning a smaller bear I have dried. I am wondering what the best solution to degrease it would be. Pelt is currently rehydrating.

Buy some super solve for degreaseing. You should of got it before you started.Nothing around the house such as dawn or anything like that is going to work on a bear.

If you cant get the supersolve-Gasoline.Naphtha is expensive but no smell(outdoors),degrease after pickle and shaving but before tanning.
Before tanning, let the skin hang out to evaporate all the gas, then wash with laundry soap, and rinse very well.Soap is alkali and it will affect you tanning solution if not completely rinsed out.

What pickle solution would you recommend prior to the gasoline degrease?

You can use aluminum sulfate pickle,or citric acid pickle. No the gas wont make the hair slip on a pickled skin.
You can wash the skin again after tanning if there is still a bit of a gas smell.

PLEASE don't use gasoline to degrease. Yes, it will work. But it should go without saying that the dangers are far too numerous to list here. It's just not worth it to save $12 for a pint of Super Solvent.

I've used gas to degrease for 30 years. No different than gassing up small equipment outdoors.
Now if your brain dead and smoke a cigarette while working around gas then dont do it.

Now if your brain dead and smoke a cigarette while working around gas then dont do it. You can re use the gas after soaking the skins, the gobs of liquid grease will be at the bottom of the container.Just pour off the gas into another container.
