I’m soaking some long springs in vinegar to get the paint off. I’ve done it before with coils but forgot about them and after a month or more the springs were shot. So how long can I leave long springs in before sacrificing strength?

Couple of days depending on how strong you made it. I’ve always went half and half with water, but it’s been years since I did it.

Not sure about paint. For rust, I use 50/50 mix, never needing more than 24 hours.

Vinegar is great on rust and removes galvanization but I'm not so sure about paint. What kind of paint is it? Latex? Oil? Probably a better product out there.

One more time

The vinegar did not ruin your springs. It is just not powerful enough to do that. Its only 5 to 7% vinegar from the bottle. Some folks use it on a salad. The springs must have been weak before you soaked them.
I've used vinegar for years and have forgotten about then in a soak several times.
Never used vinegar to remove paint though. I can't believe it would even work for that.

I promise they were not weak before. One season old traps. Should have taken a picture of them. You could see the thinning on the 650 springs. And yes it works for paint, again, I have done it before. Thanks for the helpful tips related to the post though.

50/50 vinegar/water
I put about 6 at a time in a 5 gallon bucket and after a day or so I’ll pull one out and see how it looks. All mine cleaned up looking brand new after 36-48hrs. After pulling, just rinse and set or go ahead and dye then wax. Even though looking brand new they dyed up nice and dark. And before someone says it doesn’t matter what color they are because they’re covered with dirt...no, not all the time. I do a lot of Pipe Dream sets and prefer not to have shiny metal jaws standing out under the cover.

Years ago I put some footholds into a bucket of vinegar and forgot about them for about 2-3 weeks. They were clean, but the springs got really weak. Had to replace the springs and haven’t washed my traps again since.

Now, once the season is over I either leave the traps in a big tangled mess on the garage floor or in a tangled mess in a tote in the garage.
I don’t plan on ever washing them again! And I expect to catch fox on the 2nd day of the season this year!

I put some Duke 330s in about a 50/50 mixture a couple of years ago to try to remove paint. Left them several days to try to loosen the paint. It didnt do all that well on the paint, but it dissolved chunks out of the springs. Some were so bad, the springs broke while in the vinegar. All had to be replaced. The steel on the jaws were not affected.

I would just add that after the soak in vinegar I soak them in baking soda bath to neutralize the acid in the vinagar

100 % Correct !!!! I have always used muriatic acid because vinegar takes way to long and does a crappy job. 5 minutes in the muriatic and they are as clean as they will get. And in a closed pail it lasts for years. Never tried it on paint but I will now just to see. If vinegar was that strong it would kill anyone who ate it.

All I can tell you, is that I put those 330s in a solution of nothing but vinegar and water. When they came out CHUNKS of metal were dissolved out of the spring steel. The jaws were unharmed.

Absolutely Vinegar is strong enough to weaken springs.
Dissolves cable too!

I guess I would agree to disagree yes people put vinager on salads and eat it, most people arnt made of metal and they don't hold it in their mouth for 36-48 to see if it hurts their fillings. After you try that you can tell me if it weakens metal ill stick with the truth.

I pour a gallon or two of vinegar and top off with water if needed. After they wipe clean of rust (day, 2 days, whatever), I rinse them off. Don’t know about paint.

Then I dunk them in baking soda/water bath. Always. I’m not stingy with the baking soda either. It’s cheap. This is done to neutralize the vinegar bath.
