Mine needs change. Water pump too while down there. When I watch dist rotor, and rock damper back and forth, 7 degrees slop. Slow to start too. GM 350. A timing light shows this too when increase, hold, then let off rpm. 7-9 degrees flutter then.
Talked to a guy Saturday said he was saving money and changed chain only, not gears. Lasted two days and bent valves. I forget the model on that one.
I find owner manual recommendations accurate if normal operating conditions.

213,000 , could be. Also exhaust leak when cold , warm up, pretty normal. Manifold replaced. 3 yrs ago. Expensive, cast iron, converter on it, converter already. Not work right, not plug, check engine lite on months. Needs shocks. Tired by summer. This timing chain an gears is very costly labor, manifold, $800 plus with gasket. Not pricey manifold. Probly more now. That was with labor. So timing chain make racket only when cold at idle ? I notice noise for over year, possibly worse now lately, not sure.

For the price one might pay to repair one of these new plastic cars, one could find and older Toyota pickup. I’ve had several and never had problems...even drove one for a year with a blown head gasket. Easy to work on and parts are fairly cheap. If you could afford the gas mileage a 70s era Chevy pickup never failed me either.

They do hold their value but if you don’t need a 4x4 a 2wd should be easily had for a reasonable price. I don’t find parts to be any more expensive than any other make especially with stores like autozone.

Not to mention if you do find a runner, maintenance will be about all that is needed. Also keep in mind the used part market. I used to run Toyota through rock trails in competition. Most times I out ran the jeeps in the same class.

I tend to agree with that...although my wife drives an 05 Silverado and some parts are not exactly cheap. I have old dodge trucks myself and I also agree some of that stuff is expensive....only owned a couple fords totally agree they are spendy, no worries though they made me a couple bucks at the scrap yard. I have always owned older gm vehicles and a few Toyotas and have always been pleased with reliability, ease of repair and cost of parts. I’m new to the old dodge stuff and other than a few expensive parts I’m pleased with them.
