outside piece that went on the bottom wooden draw bar for a team of horses when they get hitched up in tandom. The back teams chain went into the locking mechanism.

Yep...end of a Single Tree. We have been using them for years to make antique hangers. It appears someone was plowing or cutting and had a bad day years ago.
