I thought Hantavirus was only found out in the desert SW. If this is true, it begs the question what are these Chinese doing over there?

This is just clickbait. The hantavirus is nothing new, people in the US have been dealing with it for decades. It's fairly uncommon, but certainly nothing we haven't known about. Heck, Forensic Files did an episode on it in the late 90s I think. I've seen cases on the show, Monsters Inside Me as well.

They will eat anything and everything If food was scarce so would we. Those possum recipes and owl recipes, and crow recipes, left over from the depression are a good example

The Chinese enjoy eating strange animals. Keith

There are several forms of Hantavirus. One in Asia is known as Korean Hemorrhagic Fever. It’s been quite common in Asia for more that 40 years. KHF is carried in rodent urine. Consequently people who have rodents in and around their homes in Asia are to exposure by inhalation of the dry urine. By the time it got here, some forms of the hantavirus became attenuated. This means it lost much of its power (virulence). Some forms of the virus are found in fleas on rats from the sewers of NYC, Boston, Baltimore and other big cities where there are lots of rats living in the sewers-which come out and feed on spilled garbage around high-rise buildings at night.
In the western US there have been cases of campers being bitten by fleas from rodents and getting a nasty flu like respiratory disease from it. This form of hantavirus has not been attenuated but the numbers who develop the full blown disease are relatively low. As with covid-19, I believe most people who get KHF get a mild disease.
People tend to see China as a developed country like the US. That isn’t quite the case. There are still areas that are without running water to each home; a constant supply of electricity; and so on. I believe it’s still classified as a developing country, and as such it still has diseases and conditions we don’t often see in the west.
