What's a good resource to learn about raising meat rabbits? The boys are scheming about becoming meat rabbit tycoons (think of all the nerf guns we could buy!!!!) after seeing baby bunnies at the local tractor supply store. We've been doing some learning already, andgot a lead on some rex rabbits that would be available in may, but need to learn more. It'd be their homeschool theme for a while....business, math, reading/writing, biology, animal care, organization, etc etc. Looking for books mostly.

There are some good YouTube videos about meat rabbits. I started raising some last summer and that’s where I got most of my information.

I buy about 6 to 8 tons of rabbits a year. Besides selling rabbits to kids doing 4H and small breed rabbits to the pet trade, there is very little profit in raising rabbits, for the amount of work involved. I am not saying that it won't be a good experience for the kids, just that selling meat rabbits to a large buyer or processor is not very profitable.

Selling processed rabbits to consumers is only profitable, on small numbers, in states where you are allowed to butcher and sell the rabbits yourself. Processing fees in states where the rabbits have to be inspected, kill most profit.

We ate a lot of rabbit aka chicken to the girls. When family started on a survival farm circa 1970. Raised grey chinchilla meater's , 2 does, 1 service buck rotated out bloodline wise . Was a good gig . very good meat. There used to be some books out , but maybe hard to find now. " Creep Before You Walk"!!!!! Tut

It's a good project for kids. My daughter started raising rabbits when she was 9. She sells then as pets and meat when they don't sell young. She keeps all the sale money I covered expensive. I don't think there was ever any real profit. But it's a good responsibility and life lesson. We eat a few also. Much better than wild rabbit.

We just recently picked up a pair for the grandkids and for the wonderful meat. I had to dig out my old reference book!
Storey"s Guide to Raising Rabbits by Bob Bennett. Covers just about everything.

My son started raising rabbits as a 4H project. It was mostly me that got him started. They were New Zealands. When he lost interest I started raising them for meat.I had a large communal cage for the kits and grew them for a certain number of weeks til they were the correct weight I believe I had 10 does and 2 bucks I ordered cage wire from klubertanz and made cages. Been a long time ago and I don't remember most of the numbers but IIRC it cost about $3.50 to feed a rabbit from birth to butcher. Sold them butchered for $5.00 I did the butchering.
I found a meat market that would butcher for IIRC .75 but it was 60 miles from here.
I pretty much had it down to a science.
You sure ain't gonna get rich.
