Well I was hoping to attend my first fur auction since starting trapping a few years ago. But the North Dakota FTA auction was cancelled. I already have fur in the freezer from last year, and all of this years is put up in my shop. It’s not a ton of fur, in the freezer from last year have 4 coyotes and half a dozen coon. From this year I have 9 coyotes and another half dozen coon. I could fit it all in the freezer and go another year, just wanna make sure it’ll be okay? Last years is in a chest freezer compressed as tight as I could get em, put cardboard all around so they’re not touching the walls of the freezer, they’re all folded in half mostly. Could I just throw this years in and go another year? Fur buyer is coming around one more time so could get an offer from him but I’m not gonna get low balled. Sent to NAFA couple years ago, didn’t think I had enough to make it worth while last year, guess I lucked out there. Thanks for any advice.

If you have them fleshed well, they keep pretty fresh for several years. Any fat on them will be the first to oxidize, causing the skins to turn yellow, and when that happens, they will usually be classified as stale in the trade. A slight amount of yellowing won't bother though, so I'd say three years if they are scraped clean, less if they arn't. I've got a skunk in the freezer that I've been keeping, waiting for something else to send with it to be tanned, and it is about six years old now. It is darn yellow, but I'm betting it will still tan up fine!

Depends on the species also.I know dried marten after a year in the freezer look as fresh as one right off the board.Lean animal skins keep better than the fatty types. If you handle all your fur grease free it will last 2-3 years no problem.Mink or any fatty type skins handled with the saddle on oxidize the quickest.

Vacuum bags. Suck the air out with a shop vac.
I have a bunch of mink, some over 5 years old that look like the day I put them in.

Are you guys talking something like this. We had planned to sell to groeny and two days before he was coming through us when he had to cancel his route. So we will probably store our fur till next winter as well.
