I have run a logging business here for 43 years. I have learned a long time ago to use good lubricants. I buy my bar oil in barrels. Both summer and winter grades. Most oil distributers carry it. They also carry it by the case of 6, 1 gallon jugs. I do purchase a few cases now and then. Service Pro is a good brand I've used. Good and tacky. Cheaper than buying stihl or husky as you're basically paying for the name.

My Dad worked at an oil packaging and transfer company for decades. He said bar oil is just scrap (but new) motor oil.(winter weights are just heavier oil viscosity). They just add an additive to make it more tacky.

I have noticed some brands are more tacky than others (harder to fling off) but like scuba states, it's just flung off in seconds anyhow.

Don't overthink it.

I have always just used thick and sticky Stihl bar oil. I have cut with people using motor oil and thinner cheaper stuff and their bars and chains look a lot different and not in a good way.

I agree motor oil especially thin stuff like my trucks all use 5w20 isn't good

but no need to overthink bar oil either I probably overthink it enough with 10 and 30 weight jugs , if any major brand was really bad they would be buying people bars and chains for garbage lube. or manufacturers would tell you it voided the warranty to use anything but their brand.

on 2 stroke oil , I wouldn't use anything but a good brand , I buy the Husy or Jonsered because these are the saws I use but echo , stihl, efco, amsoil are all good

Yup, I've always used Husky or Jonsered 2 stroke oil. Premium, non-alcohol gas. I appreciate all the answers, Knew I'd get a better response here than the arborsite website. Thanks.

More so when cutting dirty wood as it then also keeps the grit and sand particles longer on the chain with it. I for one rather have that dirt flushed away from the bar and chain with a less sticky oil. Instead of it staying on like a lapping compound causing wear.

Corn oil is sticky gummy and nasty, lol. One year the night before season open I decided I needed to clean my Rem 1100. If it ain't clean its a single shot, lol.
Well it was late (you can see how serious of a deer hunter I am) about 10 pm and I tore it apart and had a can of oil but my wife had been into it for some of her important things and used it all. I had some trans fluid at the garage but didn't want to put my clothes on. The wife said why don't you use corn oil? OK sounds good. Went next morning and didn't shoot any. Waited for next season when it was cooler, shot a doe then was going to shoot another and gun hadn't ejected the empty. I couldn't hardly even pull the lever back and by the time I got a shell in it the deers was all gone. I could barely pull the barrel out of it and had to wash it in diesel to get that corn oil off.
It cost too much for somebody like me to use for chainsaw, so I use used motor oil. We've had this discussion before and Hal thinks its too messy. I keep my saws so they put the oil on the chain and not on my clothes. And as stated above I like to be able to see it to know my pump is working. My theory is as much as 3 or 4 gal of saw oil cost goes a long way on my cheap bars and chains. I can't recall call my saws name I use but they are green, lol. I do miss Hal's input, lol.

I have my oiler on max put out and dump whatever in it (Chain oil any brand.) However, I'm no lumberjack by any means.

Anyone who puts used motor oil in the bar oiler deserves a severe case of hemorrhoids. We see it all the time in the shop. They get charged more, because of clean up. It wrecks the oil pumps. Bar oil is not that expensive.......

If the oil doesn't fling off, I don't cut and find out what's plugged up.

If I ever took a saw to a shop for any reason I'd deserve to have hemorrhoids, lol.

Like it was mentioned earlier, make sure the oil delivery hole in the bar is clean/open. By good bar oil. It doesn't matter if you think it is thick. Saw run hot, which in effect thins the oil and help the oil pump get it to the bar.

Ask any reputable saw shop.

Well, some people got off the subject, not surprising. I've only got 3 choices here and I'm not paying for Stihl. I had never seen the Oregon brand and it is on sale. I would need to drive at least 25-45 miles to get more choices. I certainly don't remember the Husky brand summer weight being as thin in the jug as the Oregon appears to be, and Lord knows I used plenty of it over the years.
Thanks for all the replies. Good cutting this summer, and be safe.

Sorry I sort of got sidelined reading some of the replies. I bought 2 cases of Echo bar oil at the Paul Bunyan Show In October. Three friends of mine also bought two cases each. We used it the fall when the weather was warm, I have used it all winter doing TSI and cuttng firewood. Will buy more if they have it on sale again at the next show. Each case has 6 gallons and the price was $29.00.

Works good in all three of my Stihl saws.
